What is the setting?

The Hobbit is not set in the real world or during a real time period. Instead, it is set in the magical land of Middle Earth, a world designed by Tolkien. It is set between 2941 and 2942 of the Third Age (which is practically meaningless unless you are familiar with a few thousand years worth of fictional history)

Motivation for going on Journey

There are really two reasons the characters in this book go on their journey. The dwarves are on it in order to reclaim their home from the dragon Smaug. Meanwhile, Bilbo goes because he wants to go on an adventure (unbeknownst to him) because it is in his blood (being the descendant of many adventurous Hobbits).

I highly recommend The Hobbit. Not only is it a relatively easy read, but it's plot is fantastic. It has serious moments, but also extremely silly ones. It's a classic, and should continue to be one for many years to come.

"Yet I am glad that I have shared your perils — that has been more than any Baggins deserves." (Page 273)

This quote is important to Bilbo's journey because it shows a change in his attitude. In the beginning, all he wanted to do was stay home, and not be part of the adventure. In addition, constantly throughout the journey he mentions being homesick, but at the end, he finally realizes that it was a good thing that he went on the journey.
