Motif: Eyes
" From time to time, a smile would linger in his gray-blue eyes" (Wiesel 47 blue book).

"The women silently greeted the musicians with their eyes" (Wiesel 50 blue book).

Eyes are something that pop-up a lot in this chapter but we picked these quotes because we believe the eyes represent how the Jews communicate now. You can't smile with your eyes, you use you mouth for that, but in the first quote he uses his eyes. They communicate through eyes now because they are too afraid of speaking.

To watch that factory go up in flames ─what revenge” (Weisel 60).

I chose this quote because the interpretation of fire in this quote is very different from the interpretation of fire in other parts of the book. Usually, fire has been a motif for punishment of oppression of the Jews. However, in this quote, when the Nazi factory explodes in flames, the Jews are filled with joy and happiness. Hence, in this quote, the fire is a symbol for optimism and revenge against the Nazis.

What’s more, if I felt anger at that moment, it was not directed at the Kapo but at my father. Why couldn’t he have avoided Idek’s wrath? That was what life in a concentration camp had made of me…” Page 54
This shows how Elie is chnaging to avoid death.

Theme: Death

"And so he remained for more than half an hour, lingering between life and death, writhing before our eyes. And we were forced to look at him at close range. He was still alive when I passed him. His tongue was still red his eyes not yet extinguished" (Wiesel 65 blue book).

We also believe this quote foreshadows the hangings/death a little bit:

"Don't kill yourself. There's no hurry. But watch out. Don't let an SS catch you" (Wiesel 50 blue book).

The first quote shows that the Jews have an eminent death of either the furnace or hanging. They can't escape their death and it is going to happen eventually. They were sent there to be killed. Death is re occurring and inevitable for the Jews.

"The gallows threw its shadow over him" (61).
This is another example of the theme of eminent death. The inspiration to resist the Nazis is tamped down by the threat of hanging for the prisoners. The looming doom is shown here.
