The Problem with "Learning Styles"

Source: Practitioner Journal

Abstract: The discussion of this article is based upon the effectiveness of learning styles. While stating that although it is strongly encouraged that students learn best following their learning preferences, the studies do not always make the notion true. The article addresses student learning styles as well as instructional styles. With the flipped instruction and online educational courses, it implies that the style of instruction may matter very little but the style in which a student learns is more important for optimal success

Findings: Through the study, students were asked to complete an online survey answering questions about learning styles. After review of the surveys, analysts observed student performance as well. The research justified that students do not utilize their learning preferences when studying which could possibly be linked to their lack of success. Not particularly the type of instruction provided.

APA Citation:
May, C. (2018, May 29). The Problem with "Learning Styles".
The Impact of the Flipped Classroom through Social Learning Platforms on Higher Education Students' Creative Thinking

Source: Peer-Reviewed

The methods utilized for this study were quantitative (numerical data) and qualitative (characteristics considered). In the study, twenty-seven students were instructed through the flipped classroom instructional strategy. This group was assessed and measured on the impact of creative thinking. Before their class time, students viewed lectures online through media sources, and then utilized classroom time for discussions and hands on practice. At the end of the study, students completed a questionnaire that determined how the students viewed this instructional strategy.

Findings: The research suggests that students were in compliance of the flipped classroom for learning. Students benefited from student learner approach that fostered creativity, fluency, and flexibility to their learning styles. The results justify that a flipped classroom approach supports a student centered learning style for higher order thinking.

APA Citation:
Abdulrahman, M., & Al-Zahrani. (2015). The students in the study were able to develop and foster relationships with their peers and their teacher. In doing so, responsibility for academic success became evident where ownership was taken by students. The source emphasized how relationships correlate with the flipped classroom approach .This source explains the importance of placing emphasis on the relationships to help build satisfaction to the approach.

Findings: Students were able to converse and have conversations with peers in the flipped model where in the traditional model a time constraint is presented.
The Effect of Flipped Model of Instruction on EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension: Learners’ Attitudes in Focus

Source: Peer Reviewed

Abstract: A study was conducted in order to determine the effectiveness of flipped classroom instruction on English foreign language (EFL) learners’ reading comprehension ability. Including 110 students, fifty students were taught using flipped instruction and the remaining 60 students were taught using a traditional instructional model. The mixed method approach consisted of a quantitative study where participants completed a reading comprehension test before and after content was presented. The assessment had 30 multiple choice questions in which students were evaluated on their perceptions of the flipped model of instruction by responding to a questionnaire which was qualitative. This helped researchers determine the students’ attitude toward a flipped classroom determining the benefits.

Findings: Results indicated that the flipped model of instruction impacted students positively in reading comprehension of EFL students. The results could be influenced by numerous factors.

APA Citation:
Hamzavi, R. and Karimi, M. (2017).

Source: Practitioner

Abstract: There is evidence of flipped instruction being an effective instructional strategy. Improved student teacher interaction is prevalent due to teachers talking with students not to students. This connections allows for more immediate feedback through conversations that are happing during classroom instruction. Student engagement is stronger than a typical lecture because students are able to utilize technology and can take a break from the lesson before becoming disengaged. The self-paced learning that is provided allows for students to get ahead if mastery is present while others are able to remediate and prepare through reviewing the material.

Findings: There is no hard research that supports the effectiveness of the flipped classroom. However, there is also no evidence that it is not effective.

APA Citation:
Goodwin, B., & Miller, K. (2013, March).
