The origin of Día de los muertos originated from the Roman Catholic religion All souls day. Before this, the Aztecs celebrated a holiday by the name of Miccailhuitontli. Both holidays focus on celebrating the dead. Spanish priests were quick to recognize the similarities and moved Miccailhuitontli to fall, hoping the Aztec would become Christians. At the time, the new holiday was called All Soulsâ day. Now, it is the holiday known as ía de los muertos,

Many traditions come with this celebration. Many families honor their dead with altars. Altars may include candles, photos of the dead, flowers (typically marigolds), incense, sugar skulls, or pan de los muertos (bread of the dead). Graves are also cleaned before the celebration. Stories of good times are often told as well.
