The winds blowing in from the desert were the catalyst for the all-devouring disaster - they blew stronger, enraging the fires like bellows, until firestorms started erupting in the nearby hills. The winds accelerated up to a hundred miles an hour in the Sacramento valley. People talked of flames sixty foot high, of birds suddenly bursting into flames mid-flight, and of great walls of fire leaping over roads. Huge trees went up in minutes like sun-dried straw. Cattle caught fire as they charged away from the hellish flames. 

Everything burned. Constantly.
