During Holi, the festival of colors, my mom prepared pakoras, their aroma filling our home. The cherished family recipe, passed down through generations, featured besan, cumin seeds, chili powder, and turmeric. Mixing them with water created a fragrant batter. Coated with this, potato slices, onion rings, and chilies sizzled in hot oil. Golden and crispy, the pakoras hid tender, flavorful vegetables inside. That first bite was pure delight, a symphony of taste and texture. Those moments, gathered around the table, laughing and savoring, hold a special place in my heart. They were a testament to our family bond and a reminder of the profound meaning in life's simplest pleasures. [Reference: Kapoor, S. (2005). Khazana of Indian Recipes.]

As a first year nursing student, I want to use this skill criterion in the following ways; I would make it a priority to further my knowledge in the area of cultural competence by reading relevant articles, participating in relevant forums, and attending relevant workshops. I would periodically consider how my own preconceived notions and prejudices may color my encounters with patients. More culturally sensitive treatment can be provided once I've recognized and worked to overcome these prejudices.

An important goal would be to network with many community groups and influential people. Because of this, I am able to meet the needs of the communities I serve with greater sensitivity to their cultural norms and preferences.

To me, health is not merely the absence of disease, but rather a condition of complete mental, emotional, and social equilibrium. Meaningful activity, a positive outlook in the face of adversity, and a sense of vitality and purpose all define what it is to be "fully alive." In addition to being free from illness or injury, good physical health refers to a state of being robust, energized, and in sync with one's physical self. It requires a commitment to a regular exercise routine, a healthy diet, and sufficient rest.

Huber, M., Knottnerus, J. A., Green, L., Horst, H. v. d., Jadad, A.
Indian refugees in Australia: key health concerns and care

1. Hepatitis C : As someone informed about hepatitis C, it's a significant concern affecting the liver, primarily transmitted through infected blood. While it can lead to severe liver damage, many remain asymptomatic for years. Thankfully, direct-acting antivirals offer effective, low-side-effect treatment. Early detection is key. Prevention involves safe practices and improved healthcare protocols. Global initiatives aim to eradicate hepatitis C by 2030 through widespread testing, affordable treatment, and prevention strategies (Hepatitis C» Australian Refugee Health, n.d.).
2. Oral health : As someone concerned about public health, it's evident that poor oral health poses significant challenges, especially for refugees. Dental issues like caries and missing teeth are prevalent. Factors like trauma and limited access to care contribute. Post-arrival, barriers persist, emphasizing the need for improved education and accessible services. Addressing these challenges is vital for the overall well-being of refugee populations (Hearing, Vision and Oral Health» Australian Refugee Health, n.d.).
3. Malaria : I've learned that Malaria, caused by Plasmodium parasites, is primarily spread through mosquitoes. Plasmodium falciparum is the most dangerous species. In Australia, a third of imported cases come from migrants via Papua New Guinea and India. Refugees from endemic areas undergo a Departure Health Check, including a malaria test. Treatment, using WHO-recommended artemether/lumefantrine, is now well-documented, leading to a decrease in cases among people from refugee-like backgrounds (Malaria» Australian Refugee Health, 2015).

Australian Refugee Health» Primary Care for People of Refugee Backgrounds.

1. Diabetes : As a first-year student, delving into the complexities of diabetes has been eye-opening. Recognizing the profound impact of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) on diabetes outcomes has underscored the need for a holistic approach to care. The ADA's initiatives in this arena are inspiring, and I'm eager to explore how factors like socioeconomic status, access to healthcare, and social support deeply influence diabetes management. This journey has emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts between healthcare and community sectors for comprehensive diabetes care and research (Hill-Briggs et al., 2020).
2. Food environment : To me, the food environment signifies more than just the availability of sustenance. It encompasses the physical accessibility, economic factors, and even policy influences on my dietary choices. It's about the proximity of food stores and the ease with which I can obtain nutritious options. Understanding this intricate web of societal, cultural, and policy-driven elements empowers me to make informed decisions about what I eat (Hill-Briggs et al., 2020).
3. Affordability : For me, affordability is a paramount concern in managing diabetes. The expenses associated with diabetes care are substantial, leading many, including myself, to make difficult decisions about medications. This is particularly true for those with lower incomes or inadequate insurance coverage. Overcoming financial barriers is crucial for effective diabetes management (Hill-Briggs et al., 2020).

Hill-Briggs, F., Adler, N. E., Berkowitz, S. A., Chin, M. H., Gary-Webb, T. Shah Jahān, who reigned from 1628 to 1658, built this marvel in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Sadly, she passed away in 1631. The Taj Mahal is a testament to their enduring love.

I've grown to deeply appreciate Bharatanatyam, India's quintessential classical dance form. It's hailed as the oldest in our cultural heritage, influencing numerous other styles. Traditionally performed by women, it originated in Tamil Nadu's Hindu temples, later spreading across South India. 'Natya Shastra' forms its theoretical foundation. This art beautifully embodies Hindu religious and spiritual themes, conveyed through graceful movements. It encompasses nrita, nritya, and natya, accompanied by a vocalist, musicians, and the guiding guru. Additionally, Bharatanatyam's legacy extends to remarkable temple sculptures from the 6th to the 9th century CE. . (Cultural India, 2012)

Cultural India.
