Songkran Festival is the Thai New Year’s Festival which takes place every April. It is also Thailand’s biggest and most famous water festival in Thailand. It marks the start of the traditional Thai New Year.

1. Bangkok
The official opening ceremony is held at Wat Pho, an important Buddhist temple in Thailand that houses a golden giant reclining Buddha.
2. Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai holds Thailand’s biggest Songkran celebration, the Chiang Mai Songkran Festival.
3. Pattaya
The famous water festival in Pattaya is a week-long battle that starts a week before the actual Songkran and several days after that. 
4. Ayutthaya
Head over to Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya to have a unique experience of Songkran Festival in the country’s ancient capital.

- Use waterproof bags to protect your valuables
- Watch your belongings
- Use public transport if you're heading to one of the Songkran ‘hotspots’, as traffic will be paralysed
- Try wishing the locals a happy new year in Thai – “Sawasdee Pee Mai!”
- Smile and have fun
