Second life is a 3D online virtual world where users can create their own avatars, which then they can explore the online environment, create multiple types of structures (buildings, sculptures, interactive objects, etc)  and interact with other online users in the world. 

This platform was perfect for us to model our project around as we were able to create a prototype world for children to use and interact with. Second life was far more appropriate site as we could insert youtube links, hyperlinks, and pictures that could broaden the children's knowledge and interaction with one another.

Habbo was the first stepping stone towards the right direction of what our product would like to be. The website is an online virtual world aimed at teenagers which allows the users to chat with others across the world. 

Habbo was a great concept to show us that what we wanted to create was achievable, but making it more appropriate for the age group we had to focus on.

As a group we thought this would be a good example to use to showcase our concept. Minecraft has several different modes, one in particular “creation mode” gives the user the ability to construct all sorts of structures that one desires with unlimited access to all resources available in the game. The thought of being able to create different buildings and have multiple rooms inside that our online users could use to interact with one another made the game appealing to us, but as we started to use the program we were limited with what we wanted to do, which made us re-think whether to use this concept or not.

  • Furniture can be placed within the game

Cons
  • Couldn’t link hyperlinks to other pages from within the game
  • Limited with decorating the inside of a room
