In Latin and South American cultures the celebration of the dead is a custom that goes back thousands of years. Traditionally held during summer, upon the arrival of the Spanish it was gradually changed to coincide with the Christian celebrations of Hallowtide: Halloween (All Saints' Eve) on October 31, All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2. It also coincides with the ancient Celtic seasonal festival to mark the end of the harvest and to remember the dead known as Samhain that is celebrated from sunset on October 31 to sunset on November 1.

Bands often stroll from grave to grave, playing serenades of favorite songs. Bigger cities or towns famous for their celebrations also schedule public events beyond the cemetery, such as parades, concerts, dance performances, and more.

Memorial Day provides the same concept as Day of the Dead. Both are celebrated around the same time (last days of October to frist days of November), and involve ideas of legends and myths and ideals of the dead / of death. They're different because Memorial Day celebrates fallen soldiers, while Day of the Dead celebrates anyone who has died.

In North America, decorations often center on images of La Calavera Catrina, a skeleton of an upper-class woman whose image was made popular by the late-Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada. On both sides of the border, many fear the spiritual side of the tradition is being lost, supplanted by Halloween-like revelry. It is more authentic in Mexico.
