It can also create communication barriers between different cultures, people may also judge your accent, people may not accept us in their culture, and when this happens people lose their confidence while public speaking or socializing, some may feel embarrassed speaking their other tongue, while some cultures makes us feel accepted and recognized, others may make us feel left out

Our mother tongue is like the first home we carry inside us. It gives us comfort, warmth, and a way to feel deeply connected to who we are and where we come from. When we speak it, we often feel most ourselves—understood and rooted in our culture. It can bring us closer to people who share the same language, making us feel we belong. But at the same time, it can also create distance. In places where our language isn’t spoken, we may struggle to express ourselves fully or feel left out, as if part of our identity is hidden. So while our mother tongue is a powerful anchor of identity, it can also feel like a wall when we move across different cultural spaces.

Our 'mother tongue', represents our culture and identity. In a crowd, this language distinguishes us and highlights our identity. For instance, a person in a crowd in Dubai would be identified as Pakistani by the Urdu language he speaks. While, our mother tongue speaks our identity it sometimes hinders our belonging across many places. To exemplify, If a girl not knowing english language which is the universal language wants to buy pancakes in America, she would find it difficult to communicate with individuals and might not be able to express herself or her identity. In a nutshell, our mother tongue roots us in belonging yet it can confine us to a single identity.

It connects us to our culture, traditions, and community, giving a strong sense of belonging and pride. It also helps preserve heritage and creates bonds with people who share the same language. However, the mother tongue can also limit us in multicultural spaces. If others do not understand it, communication barriers may arise, and some ideas may not translate well. Relying only on one’s native language can also restrict opportunities in education or work, especially where global languages are valued more.

-Syeda Tasbeeh Zehra

X-Humanities-B

It empowers us by preserving heritage, strengthening ties with family and community, and allowing us to communicate authentically.

Our mother tongue is the first voice of our soul, shaping the way we think, feel, and connect with others. It gives us a strong link to our culture, traditions, and community, empowering us with a sense of pride and belonging. It also helps us express emotions more naturally and build close relationships with those who share it. Yet, this same mother tongue can limit us in spaces where it is not understood, sometimes making us feel alienated or restricting opportunities in education and work. Thus, while it deeply roots us in identity and belonging, it can also challenge us in diverse cultural spaces.

Our mother tongue is very special because it helps us feel close to our family, culture, and the place we come from. When we speak it, we can share our feelings, jokes, and stories in a way that feels warm and real. It gives us pride and makes us feel like we belong to a group of people who understand us. But sometimes, our mother tongue can also make things harder, especially when we are in a place where people don’t speak or understand it. We may feel left out or shy because we cannot express ourselves the same way.
