He appears in the novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption and the film The Shawshank Redemption. As both Red and Andy's sentences drag on, the two become closer. When he finds out, that Andy is innocent and tries to deal with the events that led to his wife's death, he helps him get through it. Finally, when Andy breaks out of prison, he gives Red directions to find a large sum of money with the instructions to come and find him in Mexico. He follows his instructions and both of them embrace, when they meet each other again.
