I felt like I did have agency back then because my culture was so easily accepted, however, I now realize agency was not so free. Our agency was pretty much powerless. Teachers directed our days. They told us we would be saying our numbers now, they would tell us how to dance to the days of the week song, they would tell us how to use a crayon and paper. However, when I stepped onto UT, it was a huge culture shock. The white supremacy is real. There were so many times where I received looks and got looked down on because I'm hispanic. It made me feel uncomfortable and caused me to isolate myself in a way that I didn't want to stay on campus for anything except class. Once class was over, I was on my way back to my apartment. We were all hispanics and grew up in a tight knit community. However, outside of school, injustice was a problem and affected my siblings and me. There was a lot of crime where we are from. All that crime made our childhood harder since we did not get the full experiences. Most of the crime was dismissed. Nothing was done about it. Injustice now makes it really difficult to remain at ease and peaceful. Seeing police brutality, social injustices, racial injustices makes today a difficult life to live. It raises my anxieties, does not allow me to focus, school or work. it affects me over all.
