In 1870 he founded the Standard Oil Company, and ran it until his retirement in 1897. At the time, gasoline and oil were the backbone of many aspects of America, and Rockefeller soon became the richest person in the country, controlling 90% off America's oil. In 1911 the Supreme Court split Standard Oil into 34 separate entities, claiming his monopoly violated federal anti-trust laws. However, these individual pieces of the company were worth more than the original company, and as a result Rockefeller became America's first billionaire, with a net worth of over $336 billion in 1913.
