My name is Christian Sabillon (pronounced Sa-bee-"John"). I am an international student born and raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. I lived in Honduras for 18 years, until I managed to graduate from a bilingual High School and got accepted into a community college in Alexandria, Virginia. I transferred to UT Austin last semester after completing an Associates Degree in Sciences and I'm currently majoring in Civil Engineering.

Some interesting things to know about me are: these past two years I've lived in three different cities and attended three different colleges. I'm a big fan of baseball, even though I was born in a country that loves soccer. I like to play the guitar, play video games, listen to music, watch Netflix, and play pretty much any sport.

I'm really looking forward to this class and hope that my different experiences and perspectives as an international student can provide some interesting insight in future discussions.

Fredo Corleone's Murder

The picture below is one of the closing scenes from the movie "The Godfather 2", in which Michael Corleone, the head of the Corleone mafia family orders the assassination of his own brother. For me, this scene in the movie shows is quite interesting to analyze for it presents signs of both particularism and universalism. Particularism is portrayed on the way the Mafia operates. They promote the abuse of power, they give special favor to whomever helps their cause, and the higher someone ranks in their hierarchy system, the more special, unique and indispensable they are. However, you can clearly see a bit of universalism when someone decides not to obey the boss. In this film, Fredo is the only brother Michael has, who is still alive, but when Michael realized Fredo was aiding a rival of the Corleone family, he does not hesitate and gave his brother the "kiss of death". Even though Fredo thought he was helping the family, felt really sorry, and was Michael's only brother he still was murdered in cold blood while fishing in the lake on the orders of his brother. Regardless of who you are, you don't go behind your boss' back in the mafia or else you sleep with the fishes.

Cersei Lannister's Walk of Shame

In the HBO series "The Game of Thrones", Cersei Lannister is the mother of the ruling king of Kings Landing (a major city in the show). As the show progresses a fanatic religious group called "the sparrows" start taking over the city means of influence with the king. The sparrows are very strict with their rules and believe that anyone who sins must atone for their them, this is a clear example of universalism. Cersei Lannister had committed incest at the beginning of the show and to atone for it she had to do the "walk of shame", which is walk around naked throughout the city. Cersei tried by all means to avoid the walk of shame, but in the end regardless of her influence or social status, everyone is the same in the eyes "the Seven" (their religious entities), and so she walked naked while people spitted, shouted and threw food at her.

Currently, there are more than one thousand official sports that are played worldwide, from which soccer seems to be the most popular. However for people who live in the United States this is not the case. In the United States football is the superstar, it represents something more than just a sport for the majority of Americans. The love and passion people have towards football knows no bounds, because for them it is something very special and unique about their culture. This is a clear example of particularism since people who live in the United States like other sports too and they are pretty good them, but as mentioned before none of them is as popular as football. That is the main reason why companies pay millions and millions of dollars just to appear for one minute during the Superbowl commercials.

Comedy on Middle Eastern Stereotypes

The following is a small clip from a comedy show performed by the Iranian comedian Maz Jobrani. In it you can see how he makes fun of the Middle Eastern stereotypes that North Amercans have towards any person who looks a little bit Arabic. I believe this shows particularism since recently most Americans whenever they think of the Middle East, they think of terrorists, wars, Syria, etc... This causes us to feel a little bit uncomfortable whenever we are in an airport and we see or listen to a language that sounds similar to Arabic, but not when we listen to Spanish or French. In this case the special characteristic given to people who are or look Middle Eastern carries a negative connotation.

This famous WW2 battle would be an example of the consequences when diffuseness is taken to the extreme. German soldiers and officers considered that the 6th Army was the best army unit that had ever been assembled as they fought countless battles and won all of them with minimum casualties. The extreme passion and loyalty these men had towards Hitler and his ideals was so deep, that they could slaughter Soviet soldiers and civilians without question. By the time winter of 1942 came around Hitler and his generals thought that the 6th Army was capable of anything, EVEN conquering Russia during the winter, and without questioning orders, the 6th Army marched into Stalingrad under the illusion that they were unstoppable. It only took the Soviets 5 months (Fall and Winter) to capture and kill the entirety of the 6th Army and 4th Panzer Tank Division in the city of Stalingrad. After this utter defeat, Germany was no longer in the offensive on the eastern front, but rather in the defensive.

The philosophy of Italian Renaissance artists is another perfect example of diffuseness. Unlike our current perception that artists should focus on one specific area of art and be experts on it, artists in the Renaissance believed that a person should be able to achieve talent and excel in many things at once. Leonardo Da Vinci, for instance, was a great painter, botanist, biologist, engineer, sculptor, among many others and he was very talented in all of those fields

A common example of a specific characteristic in our modern day culture is our way of giving credit to original authors when we cite our work. At the moment of citing you MUST specify: book title, author name and last name, chapter, pages, editorial, edition, publisher, etc... and everything MUST follow a very strict and specific format, where even a misplaced comma can mess the whole citation up. It is a really tedious and specific process that every student in college must go through, but it is better than having to face the consequences of plagiarism
