If you've ever been into a hair salon for a lengthy amount of time, you know that it is it's own world, hosting its own politics and it really is it's own culture. I really do feel like being a hairstylist becomes a defining personality trait after you've been doing it for so long. To me, being a hairstylist means that you are creative, extroverted (when need be), a therapist, a sales person, a friend to many, and a chameleon, because you are constantly blending into whatever your client needs you to be.

Until I was in my early 20's, I thought that I was just an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, I fought for marriage equality, going to protests, signing petitions, talking about it to anyone that would listen, because it's what I thought was fair and right. But somewhere, deep down, I must have known it was because I was gay. I've always found family within the LGBTQ+ community, I feel like being apart of this culture is important because within the community, we have people of all genders, all races, religions, all ages, it really is one of the most diverse communities and I think it's really beautiful.

Being a woman, growing up in a suburb in Utah, I was always told that my place was to bear to children and take care of a household. But to me, being a woman means that I can look up to all other strong, intelligent, phenomenal women that have created their own definition of what being a woman looks like, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Gloria Steinem.

I am an American, which means that I am free to voice my opinions, marry my wife (even if not everyone agrees), own a home, and have almost every opportunity that I could ever want. America has some of its own issues, and we are definitely in a problematic time, but I believe that it is something that we as Americans can come together on, and hopefully overcome.

Yoga is one aspect of my culture that has changed my life, it gives me the calmness to soothe my anxiety, and makes it so I am able to meditate on problems before reacting. I think as a whole when people practice yoga, they become kinder and less reactive to stressful situations. I really think yoga is the one thing that has gotten my through this year.
