Assessing my prior knowledge brings up such different feelings for me. On the one hand, I am excited and feel accomplished by what I have already learned. However, I also am intimidated by how much I still have to learn. As with any profession, I imagine that hands-on experience is likely the best teacher but that realization involves accepting that I will likely make mistakes as I get started. I just want to make sure that I do no harm to clients who have trusted me with their recovery journey.

I am thankful for those who have put together and updated the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders so that we have one place we can go for making diagnoses. However, I also anticipate not wanting to be the one responsible for making that decision as I have yet to see how the specific diagnosis requires a specific type of therapeutic treatment. This assignment confirmed my desire to become an integrative counselor, using a variety of techniques and tailoring them to the individual client as needed. My daughter's psychiatrist has even said "I am not as considered with the exact diagnosis as much as what we are going to do about it" (H.N. Jacobson, personal communication, March 18, 2024). I want to make sure that in light of the need for diagnoses for insurance payment, I focus on the person and their symptoms over having the correct coding.

This developmental discussion on trauma really brought to light how it is extremely difficult for anyone to go through life without experiencing trauma of some kind. The impact of the trauma follows a very personalized path for each person based on a variety of factors including their genetic composition, environmental experiences, exposure to previous trauma, and any protective factors they may also have. It is virtually impossible to predict how trauma will impact a person and even more impossible to predict the exact pathway to recovery. Keeping an open mind and remaining in the trenches with the client will help me assist them in achieving their personal goals.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) is designed to prevent short-term distress from turning into long-term distress such as PTSD by quickly acting to meet immediate needs of food, water, shelter, safety and emotional stabilization. As a public educator, I have received Mental Health First Aid training as it relates to our students, but this was a wider view of how to assist the public in general.

This assignment was very important for me to differentiate between short-term crisis intervention versus long-term counseling interventions. My definition of crisis was very narrow in scope and did not include the impact of an individual's perception on their response to an event. In all honesty, based on our family's involvement with mental health services but our lack of traumatic events, I had not considered the fact that some folks would only need a few very specialized sessions related directly to the precipitating crisis.

My name is Christine Mogan. I am close to completing a Master of Arts in Mental Health and Wellness counseling. Personally, I am getting back into the gym after a long hiatus with a current goal of three times a week. Professionally, I have my sights on achieving licensure as a professional counselor as a second career after retiring from public education.
I am hoping this course will provide me a greater depth of understanding and more tools for responding than I have as a professional school counselor. Although I have loved every minute of my 27 year career in public education, I am excited about serving children and adolescents in a deeper and more effective manner in the future.

Depending on an individual client's needs, referrals for specialized or continued services may be necessary following crisis intervention. It is best practice to provide a minimum of three written referrals to a client based on their needs, not your involvement in or with the practice. It is also best practice to inform the referral that their information has been given to a client seeking care. Finally, getting a client to see the benefit of continued treatment and verbally commit to attending follow up services is the goal of crisis intervention counselors at termination.
