The Body in The Woods by April Henry is a mystery and young adult fiction. It is filled with many cool things ranging from interesting characters, to plot. This book is about an electric trio of teens who join a local search crew. At first, their mission is easy, but the further we dig through the book, they find themselves in a murder mystery. That's not it though, very soon they seem to figure out that one of them is being hunted by the same killer.

Why did I chose this book?

While going into the book search at the library I didn't have much in mind for the book, so I was going there very open-mindedly. I had shortly stumbled across the H section. I saw many books written by this author, so I chose the one which was bolder than the others. At first glance, I can see the sleeping woman on the cover with leaves covering her. From looking at that I could infer that the book had a lot more to uncover, than what it was actually showing. The face resembled what they were giving us right off the bat, and the leaves would shrowd it with mystery, so we could uncover or move the leaves to see the whole picture. After reading the back I decided this book would be fun to read because of the mystery the back created including the front of the book.

It ended with fear and courage, love and loathing, screaming and blood. Lots of blood."
The opening lines of this book were good. the opening lines are one of the most important lines in the book, and these opening lines are able to introduce the theme and mood. By using the words
fear, screaming, and blood, we can infer one theme is scared. The opening line also shows us how what's going to happen in the book won't be easy to swallow, so we can infer that the things coming up will surprise us.

On this page they are going to the woods on a search mission for a missing man and this is the reason everything that happened in the story had happened. This page basically started the book in my opinion and is the reason the book even took place.

Throughout the whole of the book, my main mood was always worried and stressed. From the beginning of the book, the author makes it so that you never know what's coming next, anything could happen. That's exactly what happened throughout the rest of the book. When I thought something was true or finished it wasn't finished.

The theme of the book is courage. Courage conveys everything about the book. Without courage, our protagonist may have been killed. They were able to stand up for what they believed in and weren't afraid to do what they thought was right. Their sense of justice and right was strong.

Dialogue/ quotes (pt 1)

"'he's chasing her. I think he's going to kill her' he spoke in bursts, sucking air in between. He was still running flat out. 'i do not have the patience for this. Who is this? Who's after Ruby? do you mean Ruby McCulre?' 'it's nick walker. That birder guy, becker' -mich felt a fleeting sense of triumph at remembering the man's name- 'beckers chasing her. Into the forest park. And he's got a knife'" (page 237) This dialogue is spoken between Nick and his seniors. Now in the story, they have figured out the killer's name but no one knows except for the trio. While trying to tell the senior inspectors, Ruby started getting chased by the killer into the woods. This deluge creates panic and uneasy about what's actually happening, and we aren't sure if Ruby is going to be alright. I chose this quote because it's the perfect quote to show how the author can make suspense throughout the book, and make the readers uneasy.

There are no flashbacks in the book that I decided to read. But if there was a flashback I think there should be one that tells us the background information of one of the protagonists. We know that Nick is obsessed with birds and Ruby likes murder, maybe there should have been a flashback showing us why they were so obsessed with these things, and if it was trauma or some other reason.

'she's mentally ill.'" in this line we see that Alexis is learning to let go and except what she can't change. I like this line because Alexis had to forget about any grudges and had to be an adult for a second and take ownership, for the sake of her mother and the mission. in this line we see Alexis growing as a character showing a lot of character growth within herself.

(page 234) On this page, ruby was in a life-changing moment and she couldn't focus on anything else. This line is also like a line in the last choice novel (Projekt 1065) I had where the protagonist had to watch people die in front of him while all he could do was stare and watch because if he did anything else he would have also been killed. As his parents would try to stray his mind, it didn't work he just saw the many Jews dying. (https://www.alangratz.com/writing/projekt-1065/) Book link.

'Bobby is five foot eight and two hundred pounds'... 'And autistic'" In the world, many autistic kids get lost usually trying to leave an uncomfortable situation, but it ends up getting worse. In the book, they show an autistic man getting lost and having to be found by a search crew, which also often happens in real life. Usually, people will also ask for a search crew like the SAR in order to find the missing person. What do the woods represent on the cover of the book?
I think the woods represent that mystery and all the details hidden under the different layers of information in the book.

2. what does the body represent on the cover?
I think the body represents, everything we think we know or what we can see in front of ourselves, with no hidden meaning.

3. how do the characters develop during the story?
In the story, we can see many character developments, but my favorite is Nick's development. At the beginning of the book, Nick is more introverted and self-caring, and he doesn't bother to talk to his teammates. But at the end of the book, we can see that he loves the involvement with his team, and he appreciates the help and support he gets from them. We also see that Nick doesn't like it but in the end when he faces a life-changing moment he feels a lot of regrets when he ignores his teammate. "'Wait!' Nick heard Alexis calling out behind him. He ignored her even though he could never imagine ignoring Alexis there was no time to wait.

Alexis: She lives with her mom Tanya, in an apartment complex on the rundown side of town. They aren't too wealthy, so Alexis is grateful for everything; although she wears second-hand clothing and shops at stores with food stamps she is always happy. Alexis's mother is bipolar and is often off of her medication, suffering hallucinations and paranoid delusions that make her abandon Alexis. Due to this Alexis spends most of the novel worrying about her mother, which shows us that she is also very caring. Alexis is very street-smart and knows how to stay Low-Key, unlike her partners. She is also able to stay focused and under control in many dangerous and hard situations. Alexis does not have many friends and she joined the SAR (Suspicious Activity Reporting) in hopes to make them.

In the book they find a dead body in the woods, that was hidden from everyone, (or at least tried to be hidden) in the world there are over thousands of dead bodies in the woods. If found people will report it to the police, and they will conduct a thorough investigation to find the cause of the death. for example, a dead was found in Halifax County's woods. the police then investigated and found the killer using fingerprints.
Dialogue (pt 2)

"'So that makes two. two homeless girls strangled in portland. Maybe there is a serial killer. and a lot of serial killers strangling the victims' detective Harriman sighed. 'the truth is that a lot of murder victims are homeless people. they panhandle so they're constantly interacting with strangers.'" In this dialogue, they are discussing who the murderer's victims were and what may have caused the victims to die. This dialogue was important because this would build up character and knowledge about the antagonist. this scene would create suspense, on who the next victim would be. Since there are so many homeless people the next victim could be anyone, and they couldn't take any chances at all. this is one of my favorite scenes because now we are getting more information about the killer and it made me really excited.

One of the most important events in the story is when Alexis explains her mother's issues to the rest of her group. page 135 where she says, "'my moms not an oogle' she dared to the truth out loud. 'shes mentally ill.'" this is an important event because this is part of the book where Alexis is able to finally find trust in someone, not just herself, and she is able to open up about herself. This shows a moment where the team's strength and connection grow, and Alexis is finally true to herself. the reason I chose this scene is that we know that Alexis doesn't like to tell the truth about her mother and often hides the reality from others. so her being able, to tell the truth is a significant plot changer.

page 22 "No Alexis thought. no please I'm not seeing this. but she was it was back. a human back, clad in a black jacket. the hump of a shoulder dip, the smaller hill of a hip. form the angle she could not see the legs or the face. all she could see was back. uneven half curled around a bush. her blood chilled. it was him. right there. the missing man" this event was important because this was the end of the search and the beginning of the murder mystery. Right after this scene bobby returned. having finished the current mission while returning they stumbled across the dead body where all of the drama of the book will begin.

"'we should talk to Harrriman' Ruby shook her head. 'I've tried talking to him, and as far as he's concerned he's got the right guy. and just because Alexis saw the runner arguing with some homeless girl downtown that's not going to be enough to change his mind. were going to have to bring him proof.''' page 157. In this part of the book we can now see that the senior does trust them and wants to use a more experienced man for the job instead of the teens, but the trio wants to get it done and decide to gain his trust back they need to find proof that will help them with the case.
