"[S]he swung the leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head" (Dahl 2). Mary plans to kill Patrick by going to the basement freezer, finding a large frozen leg of lamb and then hitting him directly on his head. This shows a clear intent to kill him.

“Then she made the drinks, a strong one for him and a weak one for herself; on soon she was back again in her chair with the sewing…” (Roald Dahl 1). It said clearly that Mrs. Maloney drank alcohol before she killed her husband. Her mental statement was impaired by alcohol. It meets the standard of the manslaughter.

“The violence of the crash, the noise, the small table overturning, helped to bring her out of the shock. She came out slowly, feeling cold and surprised, and she stood for a few minutes, blinking at the body, still holding the piece of meat tightly with body hands” (Dahl 2). She even didn’t realize that she killed her husband by a frozen lamb. Only the big noise of her husband fell to the ground wake her up from her dream. She still held the piece of meat tightly with body hands, which means she was nervous to do these, so the death of her husband was intentional.

She killed her husband just because of he’s going to leave her then.
BBC

At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause, she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head...she still holding the piece of meat tightly with both hands" (Dahl 2).The quote describes the details about how Mary kills her husband. From the description we can find that the death of Patrick was intentional but not planned, it seems like it was second degree murder, however, it said that if the murder is caused by the emotional instability, a Second-Degree charge might be lessened to Manslaughter. And from the last sentence we can figure out she is very emotional at that time.

“When she walked across the room she couldn't feel her feet touching the floor. She couldn't feel anything at all- except a slight nausea and a desire to vomit. Everything was automatic now-down the steps to the cellar, the light switch, the deep freeze, the hand inside the cabinet taking hold of the first object it met. She lifted it out, and looked at it. It was wrapped in paper, so she took off the paper and looked at it again.A leg of lamb.” Maloney didn’t plan to hide her clue, she just walked directly and got her weapon, no any thinking, planning, this can prove that she wasn’t planning before she killed her husband, so this can’t be first degree.DW

Then she washed her hands, ran upstairs, sat down in front of the mirror, fixed her makeup, and tried to smile. The smile was rather peculiar. She tried again. "Hello, Sam" she said brightly, aloud. The voice sounded peculiar, too. "I want some potatoes, Sam. Yes, and perhaps a can of beans." That was better. Both the smile and the voice sounded better now. She practiced them several times more. Then she ran downstairs, took her coat, and went out the back door, through the garden into the street” (Dahl 2). This is the proof of Mary is planning how to cover up the fact. She moves very quickly. Her mind is very clear what need to do next. So, she is already got a plan.
