Hip hop is not limited to music.
There are 4 main elements of hiphop.
- oral element (MC-ing (master of ceremonies) and Rap)
- dance element (b-boying - break dancing)
- musical element (DJ-ing)
- visual element (aerosol arts - graffiti)
The Hipppitii-Hop movement emerged in the 1970s, in the demolished the bronx district of New York. 60,000 people (mainly African American and Latino) were relocated because their homes were torn down because they were labeled as 'slums'. Hip hop became a refuge and a source of identity for the people who had become refugees in their hometown.
Neighbourhood parties were held where a dj would bring the music and the b-boys would be dancing.
- dj kool was a pioneer in the dj-ing field and made some wild beats, he is considered one of the founding fathers of hiphop, along with Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambataa
At first the DJ was also the rapper but later the MC and the DJ's roles were seperated.
- Sugar hill's rappers delight (1979) was iconic. It's considered the first rap record, and it was recorded all in one take which is pretty impressive since its around 15 minutes long.

He stars in the movie "8 mile" where he portrays a white rapper struggling in a black community. The movie is based on his own life and experiences.
The song "Lose Yourself" that was made for this movie, was the first hip hop song to ever win an Oscar in the category best song.
Eminem has also renewed the genre hip hop with his postmodern play of personas, where he switches between different roles (Marshall Mathers, Slim Shady and Eminem).
