Exercise 5: language and communication

Verbally: Chrsitopher talks directly about the Things he likes or does not like. He is also very open. Like it has been said in Exercise 5 (Analyze [...]), the author makes it seem like, Christopher himself had written the book.

Non-verbally: Christopher does not show any emotion whatsoever. The author writes the book without any commas, that makes it seem like he doesnt put emotion into the text and doesn't show emotions. When he is scared or nervous, he often times walks away, or 'groans'. "I rolled back onto the lawn and pressed my forehead to the ground again and made the noise that Father calles groaning."
When he is being touched in a way that he doesnt like, he hits people. "I didn't like him touching me like this. And this is when i hit him." All this is because of the idea that logic is sometimes flawed, the lack of understanding about the human interactions, and how different views of communication clash to cause conflict.

But, for example space words, which are often times very difficult, he knows much.

Sentence: The sentences seem very childish and unstructured. Also very sudden. The book feels like Christopher himself had written it.

Exercise 7 (BONUS): Discuss wether Christopher should live with his father, or with his mother

Mother: His mother has a small appartement in London, a surrounding where Christopher has never really been before. He has no school there, nowhere to go, or any friends. Also, his mother lives with a man, a "stranger", whom he does not like. However, he likes his Mother very much, and hasn't seen her in a very long time. But that also means, that she has to learn living with Christopher again, which could stronger their relationship again.

Father: His father lives alone, in "normal sized" house with a dog. The house has a garden and lots of space. Christopher is familiar with the house and the surroundings. There is a special school for him nearby, and he has lots of friends there. (At least 1, Siobhan) His father is also familiar with the "needs" of Christopher. Like food or touching. Christopher's dad drives Christopher to school every morning, which his mother could potientiallly not. They both don't like each other no more, or else she would not have went away with her neighbour. The father of Christopher was very heartbroken.

Personally, we think that it would be the best if Christopher's dad and Christopher's mom would tolerate each other again, so Christopher would grow up in a friendly environment. If not, it would be the best if he would continue living with his dad, because everything he is familiar with, is at his dad's place. (school, friends, etc.) Another point is, that his dad has a steady income, which his mother has not. The father has always been caring for Christopher. His mother just searched for a new partner and went off, living somewhere else now. It seems like the mother is overwhelmed with Christopher.

Exercise 5

Christopher is a 15 year old boy with Asberger's Syndrome. He can not handle non-verbal communication because he does not understand the meaning of it.We decided to compare his communication in the beginnng/middle with his communication at the end. He mostly does not communicate non-verbal. When he is scared or overwhelmed with a situation he rolls “back onto the lawn and [presses his ] forehead to the ground […] and [makes] the noise that [his] father calls groaning.“ (chap. 11) When he is being touched in a way that he doesnt like, he hits people. (chap.11 ) he says „ if a strange man touched [him he] would hit him. […] For example, when [he] punched Sarah because she had pulled [his] hair [he] knocked her unconscious ans she had concussion.“ (chap.67) He does not like people he does not know because „they are hard to understand“ for him.(chap.67). He tries to communicate with strangers by asking questions like „what kind of car they drive, so [he gets] to know them.“ (chap.67). Non-verbally he can not look „at people´s faces, especially if they are strangers.“ (chap.67) so he indirectly shows a lack of interest without wanting it. In chapter 179 he wants to go to london because he found out his mother lives there. Then he asks his neighbour if she can „look after [his] rat Toby“. Then he tells her exactly what she is allowed to feed him for example „special pellets [which] you can buy […] fro a pet shop. But [she] can also [feed him] biscuits and carrots and bread and chicken bone.“ But then he says really straight what she is not allowed to do with hin for example „give him chocolate because it´s poisonous for rats“. In this chapter it is not much easier for him to talk o strangers. He wanted to ask someone for a map and while he does that he „tightly [held his swiss army knife][…] so thet [he] could stab someone if they grabbed“ him. But then he asks a lady with a pushchair .
