First trait of Mr. Younger

Throughout out the story Walter Leer can seem aggressive and very straight forward. He gets ignored or thrown aside quite often by his wife and family members. An example of this can be found on page 34, where Walter Younger says "DAMN MY EGGS- DAMN ALL THE EGGS THAT EVER WAS". He also says "I'm trying to take to you 'bout myself and all you can say is eat them eggs, go to work". These quotes explain how Walter is constantly treated unfairly and disregarded by his family.

Walter aside form being aggressive and angry in the house, has a bad relationship with his wife in the beginning of the story. He seems to want to make her jealous but make his son happy. On page 31 it says "What you tell the boy things like that for ... Here son- (He hands the boy the coin, but his eyes are directed to his wife)". From this quote you can say that Walter while making his son happy he is purposely trying to make Ruth (his wife) feel ashamed or tease her because he i s

Walter just seems to over react when things don't go his way. When someone doesn't listen or isn't clear about what they want. I can sympathize with Walter because he has been through a lot and still goes through a lot because he was to run the family. Aside from that he is a hard worker and looks to better his life .

The entire household remains in stress as they live inside such a cramped space and don't have money to go anywhere. Walter has to deal with the most stress because he is the head of the family and has to help his family. This piece of art resembles what Walter may feel on the inside. Him having to experience the hardships he does at this house.

"Anger and Patience" by Patti Masterman

"Any time I don't understand something
Or feel unhappy with the way things are going,
Anger steps up, 'use me; let me help'
And I used to give Anger a lot of free rein,
Till I noticed Anger wasn't all that useful
And generally tended to only make things worse.

Now I try to rely more on 'Patience'
As Patience doesn't keep clicking that counter,
Adding up every resentment of the hour.
Besides, I can look straight into Patience's face
And not have one clue what Patience is thinking of.
You know, Anger could learn something from that." I chose poem because Walter has the tendency to get angry but his patience kicks in occasionally. When things aren't going his way or hes not being heard he can get angry, but when he hears good news he gets happy and doesn't obviously get upset.

"rather than, as Mama says simply, “to find the nicest house for the least amount of money for my family.... Them houses they put up for colored in them areas way out always seem to cost twice as much."
This quote indirectly mentions that racism is indeed a thing in this book. When mama goes out and look for houses for the family but wherever she looks, the prices were higher than they should've been because it was in colored neighborhoods. There are many other cases of racism but this effects the family directly because mama is looking for where they would live.
