Bodybuilding is broadly defined as “the use of weight training in order to improve the muscularity of the body,”

Body building seemed to start with the life of the Prussian. Sandow’s performances. Sandow first garnered the title of “World’s Strongest Man” when he began showcasing his strength as its own novel act. However, his act soon took an aesthetic turn. Performances transformed into him entering a “glass booth, and perform[ing] a series of muscular poses to a musical accompaniment,” Sandow’s shows represented the intersection of three main pillars in bodybuilding: the Studio, the Platform, and the Gym. During and after the Industrial Revolution, exercise became popularized now that those in cities were working sedentary jobs. Accessible gym membership became a symptom of leisure time and an age of invention.
The bodybuilding subculture has shifted into a global competitive sphere, created a universal culture of its own out of the physical gym space, led to conventions around the world, and forged its own rulebook on a way of life.
The bodybuilding subculture has bounced back and forth in the dominant culture’s eyes on a scale of how deviant it is considered, the extremities involved in the lifestyle as well as the aesthetic it glorifies have always been considered deviant

Feminist: A feminist would look over bodybuilding as a step to make people recognize women as qual since bodybuilding is considered as a sport or subgroup made for men to enhance their bodies.
Conflict: A conflict theorist would look at bodybuilding as something that would change people's mindsets about body image. It would give people how a certain body should look like and could also influence the use of steroids or drugs to achieve a certain look.
Symbolic Interactionist: Bodybuilding relies heavily on the use of symbols to define itself. Symbols are what drive bodybuilders to push themselves through pain, endure through hunger and deprive themselves of social activities so they can sleep. Symbols give meaning to what a bodybuilder is trying to accomplish, and that is to achieve “the perfect body”. “The perfect body” is a symbol of hard work, dedication, discipline, overcoming odds, and determination. The problem with this is that some people may not share the same views. As not many people would agree with what a "perfect body" should look like.
