Purposeful Literacy Application Assignment by Sheehan, Lindsey

This is a lesson designed for a second-grade class to learn about tornadoes. Tornadoes are a very relevant issue for those who live in the Midwest. Students will complete several activities to learn how tornadoes are formed, how prevalent they are, and their impact. I chose this topic because as a student, I was always super interested in extreme weather! Living in the Midwest, tornadoes are a very real issue, so giving students background knowledge about them will allow them to recognize the warning signs and impacts.

Students will work together in small groups to complete this science project. Students will use a jar, water, dish soap, and food coloring. Students will put water, a squirt of dish soap, and a few droplets of food coloring into the jar. Students will spin the jar around in a circular pattern. By doing this repeatedly, it should create a funnel. This shows students the form of tornados!
How to Make a Tornado in a Jar (onelittleproject.com)

Students will be given a chart that details all 12 months of 2020. This chart will give the number of tornadoes each month for the state of Missouri. Students will use this information to make a bar graph chart to compare the number of tornadoes in each month. They will work in small groups of 3-4 people to complete these graphs. They will then answer data-driven questions to draw conclusions about which month has the most tornadoes.

Students will read a few articles that describe people's experiences in tornadoes. These articles will detail how tornadoes are formed, the impact they left on the community, and how the person felt. After reading these articles, they will create a diary entry of their own. This diary entry will be to a family member; it will include the setting, the weather, and the aftermath. Students will then share their diary posts with two other students and learn about their takeaways from the lesson.
