The EU is an important part of business life in the UK. Rising European incomes and living standards and the enlargement of the EU offer huge opportunities for the UK to increase exports of goods and services. The UK has attracted substantial inward investment for European businesses, which helps boost output and employment in the UK. Benefits of EU enlargement in the UK would be that potentially more exports are made, as more consumers that UK businesses can reach without trade barriers, with the addition of 10 new countries. Another benefit would be that UK consumers benefit from cheaper and wider choice of imports, meaning they spend more on goods and services. Being a member of the EU has also benefited the UK as more foreign investment is made, increasing incomes and profits and also decreasing unemployment. Studies have shown that the UK GDP has grown by £25 billion since they joined the EU, also increasing the number of jobs.

However membership of the EU has its drawbacks for the UK. One disadvantage is extra budgetary costs for the EU, which has increased the cost of EU membership. Also, free movement of labour has meant that many UK cities are overcrowded, the UK's population is set to rise 70 million over the next decade, partly due to the immigration. Also, new member countries may have stricter EU environmental standards.

Benefits of being in the EU to UK businesses

The UK's main trading partners are the countries in the European Union. One benefit of being part of the EU is that currently there is no need to trade in different currencies other than the Euro. With stable currencies firms do not have to worry about fluctuating exchange rates.

Another benefit of being part of the EU is free movement of labour. This is important as it gives the ability to travel anywhere in the European Union and work without a visa. This can benefit businesses as the free movement of labour allows firms to scope a wider range of skills and abilities. For example the UK is producing an average of 23,000 graduates that have an engineering degree. It's estimated that countries such as China produce almost twenty times as much. By joining the EU businesses in the UK can employ people that come from other European countries can fill spaces where there is a shortage of labour in a highly skilled field.

The European Union is a group of countries in Europe that participate in one economy as the same unit. One benefit for UK Businesses is that the EU offers a wider opportunity for export goods, this is because the EU is enlarging, adding more and more European countries to its membership. For consumers this now means that they have more variety at lower prices due to the rise in competitive pricing for the export goods and services. Another advantage is the rate of unemployment will decrease as the UK attracts more European investments for UK businesses, which will then allow them to expand and employ more people. A poll shows that UK manufacturers vote to remain a part of the EU, 85% of those who were asked voted in favour of staying. This is due to the major improvements the EU has on the economy, even with the downfall in manufacturing as a consequence to events in the Eurozone.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29404745

However, Being part of the EU has its drawbacks. One of which is the increasing cost of being a member of the EU, as more countries join this economical unit the higher the membership fee rises. Another disadvantage is the EUs strict environmental guidelines; on one hand these guidelines are beneficial to the world and will cut down levels of pollution, but it is very costly for the UK to enforce such strict legislation onto an economy. There are also social concerns as immigration has been predicted to rise as a consequence of other European countries having access to UK through free movement. This will lead to a substantial increase in the population and the rate of unemployment will remain low as their won't be enough jobs to meet demand.

The European Union is a group of European countries who participates in the world economy as one economic unit and operates under the official currency, the Euro

The main benefit of the UK joining the EU is that it enables free trade. Therefore it enhances the economic wealth as it creates more efficiency within the marketplace. Free trade is having a restriction-free international zone where businesses can sell their goods and/or products.

Another benefit of EU membership is an increase in market size which means a greater number of potential customers for UK businesses. This is because the EU would allow UK businesses to trade to customers from other countries without facing extra costs or restrictions on the type of goods they can sell.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/the-inout-question-why-britain-should-stay-in-the-eu-9213131.html

The Independent states that the "UK accounts for less than 1% of the worlds population and less than 3% of global income (GDP)". This could suggest that we will find it hard for our voices to be heard on subjects that affect our well-being and prosperity. We may not have a strong say in any decisions that would affect us.

In addition, EU membership wouldn't cost as much as the regular price. The estimated price for the UK to gain membership is £8.3bn.

On the other hand, a disadvantage would be that eventhough membership fees are slightly cheaper for the UK, it can still be seen as an unnecessary cost. Furthermore, there is a likely chance of jobs being lost in UK manufacturing as businesses in that sector may want to set up in cheaper EU countries.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-20448450

This is because there is a freedom in the movement of goods and services into and out of the UK. UK businesses can
sell their goods and services to fourteen other countries without having to face any extra costs or restrictions on the types of products that the business can sell. Another benefit to UK businesses is that they can take advantage of the increased access of cheaper production factors such as raw materials, technology and labour. This is particularly beneficial as these
factors are usually businesses greatest expenditure. EU membership allows UK
businesses to find and employ employees from any part of Europe. An example highlighting the importance of this is in the NHS. Staff (particularly doctors
and nurse) shortages in the UK meant that individuals had to be employed from other parts of Europe to meet the necessary demand. Further, an added benefit to the UK being a part of the EU
is that it allows UK businesses to have access to EU government contracts as well as UK government contracts.

The European Union is an association of European nations formed in 1993 for the purpose of achieving political and economical integration. One benefit for UK businesses being part of the EU is the massive increase in market size, as a result of the freedom of movement of goods and services. UK business can now sell to any of the other EU member countries without facing extra costs or restrictions on the types of products they can sell. This helps UK businesses target a wider range of customers living different lifestyles with different needs. Products which may have very low demand in the UK may be scarce and wanted in other EU countries and this allows businesses to sell their products at higher prices. Another benefit is that there is greater access to cheap factors of production e.g. raw materials, technology and labour. Businesses can recruit from a far wider pool. British employers have made extensive use of this access to a larger potential workforce in order to tackle some of the UK's skill shortages. For example the National Health Service has found this a good source of skilled doctors and nurses when they have had shortages of medical staff. An estimated 3.5 million jobs are linked ,directly or indirectly, to the membership of the EU

On the other hand, it may not be beneficial for businesses to be part of the EU as there is greater competition from other businesses in the single market. Other businesses may be providing the same products as UK businesses but at cheaper prices because they have access to cheaper factors of production in their own country.

The benefits of being part of the EU to UK businesses are that there are greater competition in services which is beneficial for both, businesses and consumers. in addition, trade barriers have been removed for European countries so no additional expenses have to be paid for imports/exports. Being part of the EU means that more businesses may expand into other countries creating more jobs, as many as 3 million! As a part of the European Union, UK businesses have a higher chance of investors buying shares in the company as the EU is a single market.

However, there are few disadvantages for UK business to be part of the EU. Because of larger competition from abroad, it may be harder for new UK businesses to thrive in a single gigantic market. As a member of the European Union, rules and regulations are enforced upon businesses increasing costs such as high labour costs and welfare policies. Monopolies may be formed, although it is unlikely as competition is more fierce. Another disadvantage is the huge expenses paid by Britain as "hidden tariffs". these estimated costs amount to £65.7 billion according to the UKIP MEP.

To conclude, the advantages of being part of the EU for UK businesses are greater than the drawbacks. I feel that it is beneficial for businesses in the UK to be part of the EU because they are able to trade more freely with no extra costs and expand their business by going into other territories.

The UK is a member of the European Union and can trade with 14 other states which increases market size, and due to access of movements of goods and services. Being a member of the EU also enables the UK to trade with no restrictions or extra cost as the EU is the main trading partner for the UK. The UK accounts for 51% of exporting goods and services to other EU countries which is approximately £200 billion and opting out of being a member could potentially have a negative impact. Another benefit of the UK remaining in the EU would mean easier access to cheap factors of production such as raw materials, technology and labour. Furthermore UK firms can employ people from anywhere across Europe perhaps due to shortage of staff

In contrary, not being part of EU membership will mean the UK will have a clean break from EU to make trades globally as UKIP leader Nigel Farage says other countries "thrive outside of EU". Another disadvantage would mean millions of UK citizens could lose jobs whereas UK firms being free of EU legislation, could result in a job boom. Significantly, they will have less competition from EU businesses and globally. The cost of EU membership is for UK is around £65.7 billion annually and opting out could mean the money could be invested in other things.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-20448450

It is beneficial for UK businesses to be a part of the EU because around 50% of our trade is with the EU. The single market brings between £30bn and £90bn a year into the UK economy which is far more than what the EU membership costs us. It is also beneficial because if we joined the single currency then trading would be more easier for businesses. Being a part of the EU means that the UK is part of the worlds largest single market which has 500million people which provides a relatively level playing for British businesses to trade in. This enables not just free trade of custom duties but a common set of rules so that the business does not have to comply with 28 set of regulations. EU member states trade two times as much with each other as a result of the single market. Exports to other EU countries account for 50% of the UK's exports of goods and services, worth £200billion. Trade with the US constitutes 13% of the UK's exports which means there will be a greater potential of exports in the EU. We also benefit from cheaper and wider choice of imports from a diverse and flexible market. The EU will also open trade doors to the Common Wealth countries and larger economies.

Disadvantages for UK businesses being a part of the EU are that there are problems of the Euro because all the other EU countries have the Euro and the UK don't which can be harder for trading. Another disadvantage is also the free movement within the EU which can cause overcrowding. There will also be extra budgeting costs. There will also be a lot of competition because of rules and regulations.

Being a part of the EU means lower telecoms costs, which is not only a great benefit to businesses but also individuals. The right of free movement for EU citizens can be valueble for employers as it enables them to be able to recruit from a wider selection of people, this is useful for UK manual labour firms because of the UK's skills shortages. EU businesses can also register a trade mark or an industrial design once and have it recognised in all 27 member states. EU competition law has been of great importance in opening up previously closed markets to new entrants, allowing British companies to expand on the continent. It has also enabled market monopolies to be tackled in a way not seen before in Europe - such as the commissions action against Microsoft.

A disadvantage for UK businesses being a part of the EU is that the free movement of labour has caused problems of overcrowding in UK cities. The UK's population is set to rise to 70 million over the next decade, partly due to immigration. This has pushed up house prices and led to congestion on the roads. The concern is that the UK is powerless to prevent large scale immigration because EU rules allow free movement of labour.

The UK is part of the Single European Union (EU). This means that it can trade one of fourteen other countries in that market without facing any barriers to trade. It also means there is no restriction in the employment of anyone in the EU or the ability to set a business in the EU. The benefits of UK businesses are that there will be an increase in market size ( a greater number of potential customers) as a result of the freedom of movement of goods and services. UK businesses can now sell to any of the other fourteen countries without facing extra costs or restrictions on the types of products they can sell. Another benefit would be greater access to cheap factors of production e.g. raw materials, technology and labour. A business can employ individuals from any part of Europe. Football clubs have certainly benefited from this. The National Health Service has found this a good source of skilled doctors and nurses when they have had shortages of medical staff. As well as this. another benefit would be access to EU government contracts, meaning not just UK government contracts, benefiting businesses who sell goods and services to government departments (e.g. road builders could be "contracted" to provide roads in Spain. There would also be lower administration costs to trade, this means that businesses do not have to pay extra money to send their goods abroad, other than normal transport costs.

On the other hand, the disadvantages of EU membership for the UK is that there will be grater competition from other EU businesses. There would also be increased costs due to compliance with EU regulations, e.g. common technical standards. The cost of EU membership to the UK is £15bn gross (0.06% of GDP) - or £6.883 billion net. The UKIP claim that the cost of EU membership in total amounts to £83bn gross if you include all possible costs, such as an 'estimated' £48bn of regulation costs ( £1,380 per head). Another disadvantage would be that enlargement of the EU is likely to happen in the next few years with a number of Eastern European nations joining the EU, this will provide a further increase in market size, but the customers will have a lower average income and also be able to compete at lower prices with UK businesses. Membership of the EU doesn't necessarily mean membership of the Euro , but the EU has placed great emphasis on the Single Currency. However, it has proved to have many problems and contributed to low rates of economic growth and high unemployment across the EU.

other than normal transport costs. As the EU is the UK’s main trading partner worth more than£400 billion a year or 52% of the total
trade in goods and services. This is a large amount spent on goods and services which are traded from the other 14 countries in the EU and so if the UK were not a part of the EU,

Businesses who employ people from different countries (in the EU) will get to pay less saving money.

The costs of EU membership to UK businesses are the fact that there will be greater competition from other EU businesses therefore the market will be fierce and some businesses may fail to adapt.

Another disadvantage is that the UK is spending so much money on the fees it has to pay within the EU.

Confederation of British Industry (CBI) director general John Cridland told the observer that the EU membership supported jobs, growth and the UK's "competitiveness".

He also stated:

"The EU is our biggest export market and remains fundamental to our economic future"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-28076876

With this in mind the UK's economic future depends on the growth of the economy. With EU membership the UK is creating around 4 million jobs which are linked to the UK's trading within the EU.

The Euro is the standalone currency used by all of the countries in the EU, because of this each country using it have similar interest rates to prevent excess inflation of interest rates in certain countries.

Source:EuroKnow.org

Countries in the EU become economically interdependent with one another over time, and so try to avoid conflict which would damage their economies. This is beneficial to the UK as businesses operating well in the current conditions can continue to operate without fear of any looming conflict which could affect its imports/exports.

A disadvantage of being in the EU is that if the EU as a whole is operating bad, with low output, it will effect other countries because there will be less trade between the interdependent economies who are reliant on each other for goods and services. For example if a country starts to build a low GDP, its businesses on average will have less money to spend on supplies and even if they do there may be little demand which would also halt supplies which are imported from foreign countries part of the EU. Now, those suppliers abroad will have less sales, and so it has a knock on effect on many countries in the EU who are economically reliant on each other.

Another benefit: for all the start up businesses and manufacturers in the UK, who are experiencing difficulty in reaching their profit targets can turn to different EU markets. Start ups that are having troubling in the UK market because of already established dominant competitors perhaps can start trade in other countries where they have better first mover advantages etc. There will be a greater pool of consumers for start ups to target because of the larger consumer base after joining the EU. They will have a higher chance of being successful which will help develop/boost their economies back home. The easier transfer of goods across borders because of less restrictions and borders will aid this.

The European union is a group of countries which have established a political as well as a economic union.

The benefit of the UK being a member of the European union is that it strips away of the barriers to entry to the free movement of good and services , which is useful to the UK because this allows the UK businesses (manufacturers) to operate in the goods and services that the UK businesses are more efficient at producing.Another benefit of being in the EU to UK businesses is that it allows free movement of capital as well as labour, meaning that businesses who require specialist workers such as if rolls Royce needed a highly qualified engineer who lives outside of the UK thanks to the free movement of capital and labour this allows the highly qualified engineer to move to the UK much easier, as well as the free movement of capital and labour allowing specialist workers to move to the UK this also allows the UK businesses to freely invest anywhere in the EU.

Although there are multiple benefits to being in the EU for UK businesses there are also some disadvantages.Because the UK is a member of the EU this also meant that the businesses in the UK need to abide by the rules the EU sets. An example of this is the new laws the EU has set to restrict the UK businesses since 2010, which are approximately 3600 in number (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2458354/3-600-new-laws-3-years-EU-strangles-UK-firms.html).Due to these laws set in plays it will make it increasingly difficult for UK businesses to compete with other companies within the EU.

One benefit for UK businesses being part of the European Union is that Energy costs are a big issue for some business sectors and EU competition rules have helped keep them down. this would allow businesses to reduce costs and in turn, become more profitable in the long run.

Another benefit for UK businesses being a part of the European Union is that it allows free trade within member states and also, British employers have been able to recruit from a larger potential workforce in order to tackle some of the UK's skill shortages. this could really help the business as if they had a skilled workforce, then it could make them more efficient.

However, a disadvantage for UK businesses of being a part of the EU is that all businesses would be forced to follow the rules the EU make.

benefits of uk membership of the EU is that it offers a single market that is free of trade tariffs and has a total GDP of around £11trillion. Studies show that the UK GDP has increased by £25billion due to its membership of the EU and 2.75 million jobs have been created as a direct result of being an EU member. Being a member of the EU also gives the UK influence in international global decisions and also policies within the EU. The UK would be stripped of this influence especially within europe if it left the EU, being left out on key decisions relating to the environment, security and trade. The EU accounts for 52% of the UK's total trade in goods and services, therefore leaving the EU would have a great impact on UK business involved in this trade. UK exports would be subject to EU export tariffs whilst still maintaining EU production standards making trade with EU members more complicated and also more costly to UK businesses.

On the other hand EU membership does have its disadvantages. For example studies have suggested that if the UK left the EU but remained part of the European Economic Area, a jobs boom would be created, with a total of 1 million jobs estimated to be created. 90% of the UK economy is not involved in trade with the EU and yet it still has to comply with EU trading rules, restricting businesses across the UK. A study by UKIP MEP Gerard Batten claims that the total cost of EU membership is £65.7 billion a year when factors such as the "hidden tariff" paid by the UK taxpayer is taken into account. This value is many times higher than the official stated membership cost of £5.85 billion a year reported by the UK government. Many argue that if the UK left the EU its influence would be greatly decreased in key decision making worldwide. However, as the UK would remain as a key member of NATO, the UN Security Council and also a big nuclear power , it would have influence in decisions without the help of the EU. If the UK left the EU it would have full control of its own borders, allowing control of the migration of workers from other EU countries. This could solve the problem of overcrowding and help to reduce the increasing number of people claiming benefits in the UK as less people means the lack of jobs would be controlled.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-20448450

One benefit to the UK of remaining in the EU is that it increases the market size, as a result of the freedom of movement of goods and services. UK business can now sell to any of the fourteen countries without facing extra costs or restrictions on the types of products they can sell.

Another benefit is that they also have access to 500 million customers by remaining in the EU and this creates more demand for UK businesses as we can now trade between markets without facing barriers to trade.

Also, there are 1 million Brits living in Spain, 330,000 living in France and 65,000 living in Cyprus. There are also 330,000 in Ireland. If we left the EU, it is not clear what would happen to out citizens living and working abroad.

However, a disadvantage of remaining in the EU is that businesses in the UK are now facing a lot more competition from those in the EU, which may result in some UK businesses failing.

Another disadvantage is that in recent years legislation was passed that the UK hospital system would be fully open for other EU members. This is a system which costs the UK billions per year, with a fair portion of this being spent on foreigners who have paid little to no money to make use of the facilities, leading to extra costs of employing more doctors and nurses.

A benefit of the United Kingdom staying in the EU is that by being a Member State of the European Union the United Kingdom is part of the world’s largest single market – an economic zone larger than that of the USA and Japan combined with a total GDP of around £11 trillion. This single market of 500 million people provides a relatively level playing for British business to trade in. This enables not just free trade in terms of the absence of customs duties or tariffs but a common set of rules so that business does not have to comply with 27 different sets of regulations.

It is estimated that around 3.5 Million jobs are linked with the European state.

However a Major disadvantage is that United Kingdom is spending Billions and Billions Pounds worth of fees in the EU and this is taken out the pot, the fees could be used for many pother things in fact thousands of other things to make this country better.

By opting out the EU wont really harm allot of people because 90% of medium and small sized businesses are NOT involved in the EU trade.

There are a number of ways that the EU benefits businesses
in the UK. One being that there is greater access to cheap factors of production
e.g. raw materials, technology and labour. A business can employ individuals from any part of Europe. There is also access to EU government contracts, not
just UK government contracts, benefiting businesses who sell goods and services
to government departments. There are lower administration costs to trade, meaning that businesses do not have to pay extra money to send their goods
abroad, other than normal transport costs. There is also an increase in market
size as a result of freedom of movement of goods and services. UK businesses
can now sell to any of the other 14 countries without facing extra costs or restrictions on the types of products they can sell.

However, there are disadvantages to EU membership to UK
businesses also. There is greater competition from other EU businesses and there are increased costs due to compliance with EU regulations e.g. common
technical standers. Enlargement of the EU is likely to happen in the next few years with a number of Eastern European nations joining the EU. This will provide a further increase in market size but the customers will have a lower average income and also be able to compete at lower prices with UK businesses.
