And that was how a friendship was made!

Trevor the monkey sat and sadly watched as all of his friends packed up their belongings. The sloths, moving slowly as always, were swinging from branch to branch already heading for a new home. The family of iguanas that he’d lived next to all his life was making its way out of the clearing. Trevor waved good-bye to the eagle that was soaring past him.

He couldn’t believe this was the end of the home he’d always known. When he first heard about the hyenas, he hadn’t thought much about it. He would never have guessed that they’d want his part of the forest. It was small and tucked away under big leaves and shady trees. It didn’t even make sense that hyenas would want to control the trees. They slept on the ground in holes or pits anyway.

Trevor’s mother reminded him that it was almost time to get going. They were heading for a big clearing that some of his cousins knew about. It was all the way on the other side of the forest and it would take days of travel to get there. Trevor looked around at his cozy tree branch where he’d slept for so many years. He started to feel angry. Why did these hyenas get to take away his home?

Ignoring his mom’s protests, Trevor took off swinging in search of the pack of hyenas. He knew that if he could just talk to them face-to-face, he’d be able to get them to see his reasoning. There had to be a way they could all share the rainforest in peace.

As he got closer to the hyenas’ den, his pace slowed down. His nerves were starting to get the better of him and now he couldn’t remember what he was thinking. He stopped just out of the hyenas’ line of sight and curled up in the safety of a tall tree. It took Trevor a moment to remember why he needed to stand up for his home and even longer to get up the nerve to speak. He reached the point where he knew it was now or never.

Gathering himself to his full height, Trevor puffed out his chest and marched into the hyena den with his head held high. Immediately, he was met with laughter and mockery from the hyenas that had gathered around him. Suddenly, he realized that he was only a young monkey. He wouldn’t be able to take on an entire pack of hyenas if this turned ugly. He crossed his fingers and hoped for the best as he began to speak.

In a calm and steady voice, Trevor outlined all the reasons he believed that he and his family should be allowed to keep living in the trees. He talked about peace and balance and how long the trees had belonged to his monkey family. To their credit, the hyenas didn’t interrupt or make fun of him as he spoke. They let him finish his speech before they responded with complete silence.

Just then, there was a loud clearing of the throat and instantly, the circle of hyenas separated, forming a gap just big enough for a large hyena to walk through. He came right up to Trevor and stared him down. Trevor gulped, feeling all of his anger drain away only to be replaced by fear. Oh well, he couldn’t back down now! The large hyena glared at him. "Well, well, well your right." said the large hyena. Some of the fear in Trevor was replaced by hope. "However," continued the hyena, "We hyena's need the trees." "Why," said Trevor getting more confident by the second, "Why do you need the trees? Plus I don't know your name yet!" Trevor realized the hyena was glaring him. "You," hissed the hyena, "You dare to question the hyenas, eh little monkey? You shall call me Chief understood? And we have our reasons to hold the rainforest. You shall not question us eh monkey? Now go home and leave the forest!" Trevor said in a small voice "B-but the r-rainforest is m-my home." The chief bared his teeth. Trevor ran and jumped his way out of the den. He could still smell the hyena den as he swung to his home.

Inside, there was a big wheel with different sections on it. On the side of the wheel, there was an arrow that pointed at one of the sections. There was a waiter standing next to the wheel.

He said, “Welcome! Time to find out where you will be sitting!” He spun the wheel before Layla could say anything.

As the wheel slowed down, Layla could see the writing on different sections. One said, “The High Table.” Another said, “On The Floor.” The wheel came to a stop on the arrow pointing to “On The Roof.”

The waiter led Layla through the restaurant. She saw people sitting at all sorts of different tables, and some were even sitting on the floor. Layla said, “I’m not really going to sit on the roof, am I?”

The waiter said, “I will show you the roof table and you can decide if you like it!” He led her through two large French doors into the kitchen. Then, she carefully followed him up a narrow staircase.

When they reached the top, Layla not only saw the table, but she also had a beautiful view of the town! It overlooked a park with a lake that glittered in the sunshine. The birds were singing and the noise from the traffic on the street made a quiet rumble. “Do you like it?” asked the waiter eagerly. Layla nodded, taking in all the sights as she sat down.

Layla noticed that none of the silverware matched. The plates were different shapes and colors, too. Layla noticed that there was no menu on the table, and the waiter was not carrying one. “I don’t see a menu. May I have one please?” The waiter grinned and pulled a set of three dice out of his apron pocket.

“Just roll these dice! One will say what your main course is, one will say what your appetizer is, and one will say what you have to drink,” he said, as he set the dice down in front of her.

Layla made a face. She thought about protesting, but she decided to take a chance. After all, this was The Surprise Cafe. She rolled the dice.

“Great!” said the waiter. “Your meal will begin with a bowl of gummy bears, followed by a plate of bread. Your drink today will be cucumber juice.”

As the waiter walked away, Layla thought, “Well, at least I’m surprised…”

All of the fairies were trying not to remember last rainy season. A nearby mudslide had ruined the entire village and had hurt many fairies. It had taken years to rebuild what they had lost. Moonbeam took her sister’s hand and squeezed it gently. “The web work we did today should be strong enough to protect at least part of the village!”

Sunlight nodded, “Yes, but what about the rest of it? The rain could come sooner than we think and then we’ll have no time to finish it! Then what will happen?” Moonbeam didn’t have an answer to this. She just kept holding her sister’s hand in hopes that it would make them both feel better.

Just then, a shadow loomed high overhead and a quiet humming could be heard. “It’s a human!” Moonbeam whispered excitedly. Both fairies quickly flew off their mushrooms and into the branches to study this human. She was a young girl with braids and a skirt covered in polka dots. “Should we talk to her?” Moonbeam started to fly forward. Sunlight grabbed her arm. “Are you crazy? We don’t know anything about her! She could get startled by us and accidentally get hurt!”

Moonbeam shook off her sister’s warning, letting her curiosity get the best of her. “Hello there, human!” she called out. Her soft voice rang out like a wind chime. Sunlight watched from behind a leaf as the human stopped. “Hello? Is somebody out there?” Moonbeam flitted forward, her skirt leaving sparks behind. “Hello there, human. No need to be afraid, my name is Moonbeam!”

The human jumped back in surprise and shuddered, “W-what are you?”

Her voice was softer than the fairies had expected. Moonbeam explained that she was a fairy and introduced her shy sister who was still hidden up in the tree. The human listened with interest as Moonbeam and Sunlight told her all about the troubles that were heading toward the fairies’ village.

“Well, I won’t let that happen! I’ll be back tomorrow with some different things that I think will help keep your town safe!” The human, Henrietta, darted off into the forest the same way she came.

Sunlight and Moonbeam settled back onto their mushroom. “Do you think she’ll really come back?” Moonbeam asked. Sunlight nodded, “Yes, I really think she will!”

"B-but Violet is downright careless!" shrieked Sunny shaking her head viscously so her golden hair flew in slow motion. "Who's ready for their first mission? I am.'' sneered a cold voice. Sunny turned around and their was a fairy with bright purple hair. Ariana nodded to Sunny and said importantly, ''Yes Violet, you've got a hard mission (Sunny's jaw dropped). You have to help a girl named Mia. You have to help her be brave. Be encouraging. Good luck." Ariana slightly bowed. Violet bowed back and with a smile she said "I don't need luck.^" And with a cruel smile she vanished. Now backed to Mia Vandyke who was currently in the park with a girl by the name Rose Carter. Rose was sitting with Mia. Rose saw a purple raven who was staring at them and gave a sharp poke on her ribs. Tears filled her eyes and she ran away sobbing. "Mia come back!" cried Rose. Reader that raven is not any ordinary raven. It was Violet in the form of a raven. Violet smiled and took the form of a old lady. Then she gave a cold laugh.

Liana. "This is a very real story... There's a door behind our shed. No one knows what's behind it. Legend says-" "Lets go find out!" said Cassandra. "B-but," started Liana. "Oh Li, please don't tell me your scared." said Angelica. "Of course not, but we-we have to sleep!" said Liana in a panicky voice. "Yes but you don't look sleepy." said Cassandra. "That settles it were going, we need food, water and a blanket. That could lead any where!" squeaked Angelica. Liana sighed and followed them out of the door. When they reached Liana said "Look I don't wanna get caught..." "Stop being a scaredy-cat" hissed Cassandra. Liana shrugged as if to say do what you want but she secretly was worried. They reached the shed and opened the door with a creak. Behind the shovels and seeds was a old looking door. Liana took a deep breath filling her nostrils with dust. Cassandra and Angelica moved the pots which fell down with a crash. Liana hoped no one heard. Cassandra reached out and opened the door. Inside there was a black hole. "Lets hold hands and jump in!" whispered Angelica. Liana gulped and held Angelica and Cassandra's hands. They stepped in the hole and felt a zap. Liana opened her eyes and closed them and closed them when he saw a blinding flash of light. Her skin was burning hot. Angelica was gripping her hand while Cassandra was holding her arm with both hands. Suddenly Liana and her friends fell down. She looked up.
