Initiated by Secretary Marshal: This plan boosted European countries to get back on their feet post WWII.          <title>Korean War </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Korean war was the first military action of the Cold War.          <title>Race for Space</title>

Up to this point there was a race for weapons, political ideas, territory and in the 1960's space exploration was now a concern.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This wall above served as another reminder of the cold war. It became a physical divide to emphasize the differences in ideologies. The Berlin Wall stretched 27 miles long and was lined with barbed wire, guards, and land mines. The Iron curtain was lifted and as shown in the map above the Soviet Union became several independent countries.          <title>Cuban Missile Crisis</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Previously the Soviet Union promised to defend Cuba (which had a heavy communist party) with arms and missiles. The points on the image above are where missile launching sites were. And the land above Cuba is Florida, meaning that these missiles, if launched, could hit much of Eastern U.S. The Soviet Union sent missile shipments to Cuba. JFK formed a blockade to seize all arms imports to Cuba. The Soviet Union agreed to stop sending weapons and take back the missiles as long as U.S troops left Cuba, and the conflict was resolved.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Above are Americans who fought in the The Vietnam War, another proxy war for the U.S. The main incentive was to intervene into Communist Bloc terrioriory (Cold war). At the time Vietnam was divided into communist north and non-communist south. After South Vietnam's dictator was assassinated an anarchy was formed which led to U.S involvement.          <title>Space Race Update - Apollo 11</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>US Apollo 11 landed the moon and Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon. This US achievement was pushed by JKF who said that the U.S needed to overtake the Russian space program and put the first man on the moon. The U.S caught up to Russian intel again.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks were negotiations between the US and USSR. In efforts to limit and apply rules to nuclear weapons. The first result of these talks was the treaty on Anti-Ballistic Missiles. Signed by Nixon and Brezhnev as shown in the Image above. This treaty outlined the specific regulation to anti ballistic missiles.          <title>Soviet troops invaded Afghanistan</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the image above is a vehicle manned by Soviet troops who are making rounds around Afghan civilians during the invasion.&nbsp;Afghanistan's new government followed Marxist ideologies and had close ties with the USSR. This government was not favored by the majority of citizens but still they enforced their ideas domestically. It led to uprisings between the two parties and the Soviet Union invaded in hopes of gaining another client state. The anti - communist bloc grew and was backed by the US. After years of fighting and conflict, Afghanistan returned to an unaligned status.          <title>Suez Crisis </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Suez canal controlled 2/3 of the oil used by Europe. Israeli forces went into Egypt for the Suez canal but the canal was nationalized that year. Israel was joined by France and Britain in these effort. This conflict was a brief moment of union between the U.S and USSR during the Cold War. Eisenhower advised Khrushchev that direct intervention in this conflict would only make it worse.          <title>Berlin Wall down</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1989 the Berlin Wall fell after nearly 20 years. The night of the 9th it was broadcasted that the gates of the wall stand wide open. Negotiations between the West German chancellor, Bush and Gorbachev agreed on reunification of the two German states.          <title>Romanian Revolution</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Revolts against the dictators regime started in December however quickly it spread to the rest of the country and several began to demonstrate. The people of Romania were unsettled because the dictator was making poor economic choices among many. The country was in economic hardship and then he splurged on the palace only making the citizens more agitated, and even troops helped (image above). Ultimately the dictator and his wife were overthrown. This relates to the cold war because Romania was one of Europes most repressive communist regimes.          <title>Olympic Boycott by USA</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Summer of 1980 the Olympics were held in Moscow, however it shined a light on how much the Soviet Union was disliked. President Carter suspected the the Soviet Union was getting ready to commandeer the Persian Gulf. So he increased funding in the army and gave money to the anti - communist organization in the Soviet. Several of the attending countries did not go to the opening ceremony.
