Oliver Cromwell died of malaria in 1658, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. 2 years after his death, the royalists returned to power and they had his corpse dug up, hung in chains and beheaded. Cromwell was a lead influencer in overthrowing the king, therefore, he was resented by all royalty. When he died, his influence was buried with him, and england was right back where they started, with a monarch. Once the king had seen what the people could do, they had to make it clear that it wouldn’t happen again. They did this by publicly hanging Cromwell’s body in the streets for everybody to see. This shows how much influence he had on the people and how much of a leader he was in the revolt against the king.

Oliver Cromwell was a very religious man. His religious beliefs are what first brought him into opposition to the king’s government and he believed that god led him to all of his victories. Unlike the King, Cromwell hired soldiers based off strength and wits, ignoring social status and religious beliefs. This gave the New Model Army skilled soldiers that the King would have overlooked because of his beliefs. This gave them the powerful men that they needed to raid bastille and acquire gunpowder and weapons. This led to a successful overthrow of the king and revolution overall.

Oliver Cromwell had connections to royalty before he was born. Cromwell was indirectly related, on his father’s side, to Henry VIII’s chief minister, Thomas Cromwell. His grandfather also regularly entertained the king’s hunting party. Because of this, Oliver was granted a very high level of education and was very religious. These factors all influenced cromwells actions later in life. After suffering through a problem with religion, he became very tolerant of religions. His wealthy family also gave him a lot of power and he used that to help overthrow the king.
