This story would be good for grades K-2. It starts off with Madeline being saved by a dog. The dog goes home with the school of orphan girls. Naming her Genevieve she becomes part of the family. However, The annual inspectors would find and kick out the dog. The girls went on a long search for her. When they do find Miss Genevieve they find they have enough puppies for each little girl in the school. This book would be perfect for K-2 because it rhymes, has an animal in the story and can be finished in one sitting if one has a short attention span.
Bemelmans L. Madeline's Rescue. Published by Viking Press, 1954.

Hello Light House by Sophie Blackall

This book is good for ages 4-8 grade K-2 Hello Light House starts off with the new keeper of the light house and his wife and child's daily tasks. This shows repetition which is important for rapid development of language. The story also talks about the view from the light house like wales, fish or the scenery. This brings interest into the book while using colorful illustrations. Eventually the light house is provided with a new light that can function on its own and the keeper and his family is no longer needed. This shows the concept of time and how life is advancing everyday. This book is short and sweet and good for kids with short attention spans.
Blackall S. Hello Light House. Published by Little, Brown, and Company, 2018.

Black And White by David Macaulay

This book is perfect for ages 3-7 grades K-2 The book tells four stories at one time "Seeing things" about a boy on a train trip by himself awaiting to see his mother, "Problem parents", about siblings whose parents behave differently at night and confuses the child, "A Waiting Game", about people waiting for a train to arrive, and "Udder Chaos", about cows who escape and eventually return to their farm. This book has a lot going on at one time which keeps the reader confused yet intrigued. The illustrations use black and white pictures with hidden images. This keeps the attention by pointing out the chaotic images. This book's idea is polar oppositions in people and the ways in which they act based on the events they experience.
Macaulay D. Black And White. Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1991.

Grandfather's Journey By Allen Say

This book is good for ages 6-9 grades 1st-3rd Allan Say's, "Grandfather's Journey", is a regretful yet eye opening picture book about immigration, homesickness, family, and views. It begins with the grandfathers journey to america after becoming homesick he takes his family back to japan, his homeland. After his grandson is born a war breaks out. This shows the separating of fantasy from reality which this age group can comprehend and making them aware of immigration and diversity. For example "He met many people along the way. He shook hands with black men and white men, with yellow men and red men" (Says 12). Says also uses more complicated words such as "astonished" (Says 5) and "Enormous" (Says 8). This is helping with development of language or vocabulary. Later in the story the grandson, the narrator, finds himself wanting to know the glorious lands of america his grandfather always talked about and decides to move. However, he too becomes homesick and understands his grandfather's decisions though grows a love for both places. This book would be used in a lesson teaching about immigration and diversity among the world. This could help students learn about their own ancestors and their history.
Say A. Grandfather's Journey. Published by Houghton Mifflin, 1993.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat By Simms Taback

Ages 3-7 grades K-2 would benefit by reading "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" The moral of the story which Joseph says at the end of the book is "you can always make something out of nothing" (Taback 29). This book begins with Joseph wearing his over coat. Over time the coat gets worn out and old. He recycles the fabric into new things. This shows the concept of time. The illustrations have cut outs showing the new object Joseph will make. Helping students stay interested by pointing out what he may make next. The book is easy to finish in one sitting which is good as this age level has a normally low attention span. As for a lesson this book could be used for interacting with the book and even showing students they can make something for themselves even when they feel low or nothing is left.
Taback S. Joseph Had a Little Overcoat.
Finders Keepers By Will and Nicolas

ages 9-12 grades 3rd-6th fits this book. "Finder Keepers", the overall meaning is that just enjoy what you have now because you could have nothing. At the beginning the two dogs, Winkle and nap, find a bone. By using dogs as the main characters this keeps the readers interested while learning a lesson at the same time. However, they fight over who should have the bone. They ask passengers who the rightful owner is. Eventually, a big dog takes the bone instead of telling them who should have it. They fought for the bone back and decided to share. This teaches students to share among others and while being stingy someone may come along and take what you once had or you could not have a "bone" to begin with. Therefore, the lesson being learned is to be thankful for what you do have. Lipkind W & Mordvinoff N. Finders Keepers. Published by Harcourt Education, 1951

So You Want to Be President by Judith St. George & David small

This book "So You Want to Be President" is mainly for ages 7-10 grades 2nd-5th This story explains the similarities and differences between forty-nine presidents over the years. It begins with the good some did and then shows some that failed or maybe even were impeached. Helping with understanding between right and wrong. This shows students not everyone is perfect because even most of the presidents weren't but to always be your best self. This story shows the concept of time by showing the dates of the events each president was in. Can help students to seek new abilities or goals and be independent. How I would use this book in class as a lesson is I would ask my students "Would you want to be president?" If so "How would you improve from the rest?"
Judith St. George & David small. So You Want to Be President. Published by Philomel Books, 2000.

The Lion and The Mouse by Jerry Pinkney

the age group 3-6 grades K-1st would benefit from this story. Students may readily point out at the start that the lion not only rescues the mouse by releasing her, but she also saves the lion's life from being captured by hunters. Students might relate this to treat people as you would want to be treated or Karma - that all good will come back to you. This book is perfect for this age group to encourage reading because the illustrations are easy to understand and let them make up their own dialogue. This book enhances their idea of imagery for future reads. As for a lesson I would have the students make their own short picture book telling a story of how to treat others with kindness like the lion and the mouse did for each other.
Pinkney J. The Lion and The Mouse. Published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2009.
