With restaurants not allowed to have dine-in, some have shifted to online delivery apps so people can still buy food. With having a low entry in the market, online businesses have the power to make new trends in the industry as well. People see the potential of using delivery apps in businesses and so small online businesses are increasing, mostly in selling food like baked goods (ex. Ube pandesal, cookies, sweets). Another example can be seen in how Tokyo Tokyo followed the sushi bake trend made by online shops at the start of the pandemic.

With this the GDP also declined by 16.5% resorting to declaring less restrictive lockdowns. With the less restrictive lockdowns, the workforce was able to operate to support the Philippine economy’s resilience. Moreover, unemployment rates gradually decreased by however, still remains below the percentage of the same months a year ago.

Kantar Philippines, provider of ABS-CBN’s media data, is shutting down its media division effective December 31, 2020 as they have lost their main source of revenue for that division. In addition, MTRCB, the local regulating agency, has also lost about 40% of its revenue because of the network’s shutdown. The government’s refusal to grant the network a franchise constituted a chilling effect towards various industries, including manpower agencies and other forms of service providers which ABS-CBN contracts within a year.

This type of transmission occurs via respiratory droplets.” (1) The World Health Organization has also confirmed that people could in fact catch COVID-19 from touching surfaces then their eyes, nose, or mouth. (2) This fact has raised another point of precaution for the general public and this has brought upon great competition in the surface care industry. This then forces all frontline surface cleaner companies to all be effective against COVID-19, if not the consequences would be dramatic in terms of sales. In the US alone there was an increase of 385.3% of sales in march 2020 alone of Aerosol disinfectants which include spray on surface cleaners. (3) This statistic alone proves the dramatic change in the market for surface cleaners. 

                Due to the ongoing pandemic, people have become more cautious of every surface they come in contact with. No one wants to contract the disease so everyone wants to make sure that the surface cleaners they use are working. Within the surface care industry, it is a race between the different brands on which one of them is the most effective at getting rid of the virus. With Lysol leading the charge and claiming that their product is capable of killing the virus, other brands in the industry are also being pushed to be effective against the virus as well.

    In an already saturated market, other firms have been trying to market their other services which cater to the same need. Angkas, for example, was once popular for its evasion of traffic on a normal day. But what most people don't consider is their delivery services it has as well. So of course they would want to build on the strengths of the other firms and market the said service to its market so that its target market could also indulge in its delivery services. This photo was a legitimate ad from Angkas back when the pandemic was still fresh.

Some engage their time in arts and crafts, others tried their luck in the kitchen and became bakers, and some were led to the ecological route and then emerged as the new plant enthusiasts, known today as the “Plantitos and Plantitas”. 

    Plantitos and plantitas can be those people who have been into gardening even before the pandemic, but a sudden surge of this group belong to those who discovered their green thumbs while being homebodies because of the quarantine. They treat their plants and flowers like their own children or pets that require their attention and money. Some seems to have converted their homes like a concrete jungle of plants. With the bloom of plant lovers, it resulted to the high demand and a double or even triple increase of prices for gardening essentials like soil, fertilizers, pots, plant stands and hangers, and other planting accessories. This trend of plant enthusiasm became visible in the different social media platforms where the plantitos and plantitas proudly flex the pictures of their new “babies” at their very own jungle.
