Since I was a child I decided that my future job should be something with people, I was born to help people. When I finshed my high school I tried to apply for medicine school but I failed, I tried biotechnological university for one year but I have to be more in touch with patients, not in a laboratory, so in agreement to my parents I decide to change university and to be a paediatric nurse. Now I am very happy about my choice to work with children and their parents to save their lives, especially in an hospital like Bambino Gesù that is so important in Italy and all over the world.

We are in the hospital, it's morning rotation, there are a nurse (N), a trainee (T) and the patient (P), a 16 years old boy called Antonio.

N-> Good morning Antonio. How do you feel today? Did you sleep well?

P-> Good morning, yes I slept well but I'm still tired and I have a slight headache

N-> Ok don't worry now if you agree I'm going to let my student measure your blood pressure.

P-> Ok, no problem

T-> So Antonio, I'm going to check your bracelet to check your name and I'm going to take your blood pressure.

One minutes after.

A SISTER= When I arrived on the ward I was assigned a tutor by the sister.

SHIFT= The morning shift is more difficult because there are so many blood samples.

DIALYSIS MACHINE= in the nephrology ward most patients use dialysis machine due to their kidney problems.

STRETCHER=if we accompany a patient to surgery we always carry him on a stretcher.

WHEELCHAIR= patients who cannot walk for neurological or skeletal or muscular reasons can use wheelchairs.

AMPUTATE= in severe cases of diabetes there is a risk of having to amputate a foot.

LIMB=blood pressure can be taken on each limb according to the patient's needs.

SWAB=if you have a cut you need to swab with lodine or alcohol

HYPOTERMIA= the patient was immersed in the snow for three hours and is at risk of hypothermia

UMBILICAL CORD= the umbilical cord is usually cut by the father who is also usually in the delivery room

SHARP PAIN=I was taking a walk when I got a sharp pain in my right leg

LUMP=I had a lump under my armpit I thought it was a tumor but fortunately it wasn't

CRAMPS= I've had severe stomach cramps at night for a month now

STITCHES= when my son arrived at the hospital the doctor immediately stitched the wound

CHRONIC= mine is a chronic illness. I have had it since I was 15

Doctor House is a tv serie set in this hospital where there is a special ward, where Doctor House is the chief, that help the doctors to formulate diagnoses. He is brilliant, he can find the diagnose from a little detail that anyone else can think, but he is also rude and detached with patients and with all the staff, I wouldn't be like him of course but is so interesting to watch a series where the main character is also someone that you hate because of his behaviours

How did you feel about your first rotation? What ward were you in?

I did my first rotation in the reumathology ward, when I discovered that I was assigned into that I feel very excited because it's quite an interesting ward about nursing, kids with chronical disease that you have to support and that you have to take care in many ways. My first day was a little bit confusing, I didn't know how to move, how to relate to patients, I didn't know how to help my tutors but with a little bit of time I have learn to do small things and to be usefull for the ward.

A good nurse for me is defined as such, if she is a person with a good education, who has studied the clinical relevance for which she knows how to act to improve the health of patients. But not only this, a good nurse must be empathic, friendly, loving, generous, able to know how to reassure the patients and knows how to listen. The work of the nurse is very difficult, she must work in contact with people who have health problems, for which they entrust their health to them and to doctors. I think that I will be a good nurse thanks to the personal social skills that I have, and thanks to the internship that I am doing to increase and improve my practical skills and thanks to the study that I am doing for which I am learning how to perform a better performance towards patients both from a physical, social and psychological point of view.

IMPROVING PATIENT CARE

In July 1999, Isabel, a three-year-old girl, got chickenpox. When her symptoms started to get worse, even though the doctors said it was normal, she went to the emergency room. When she got to the hospital, her condition worsened and she went into multiple organ failure. For the next two months she suffered from toxic shock syndrome and necrotizing fasciitis. She would have died if her parents had listened to the doctors. After this experience, the pediatrician Britto and the family decided to open an association to create a diagnostic tool to never make mistakes again. The tool was called Isabel and is a software with a list of possible diagnoses inside, which selects some after entering the patient's signs and symptoms. Initially it was only for pediatrics, now it is also for adults and is used in the UK, USA, Ireland and India.

One of my clinical tutors was Raffaella from Reumatology , a compassionate and attentive nurse with a calm, patient demeanor. She had an innate ability to listen actively, creating an environment where patients felt heard and cared for. Her teaching style was both hands-on and supportive, offering constructive feedback without being overly critical. I admired her dedication to continuous learning and her ability to explain complex procedure and also to let me try. Raffaella's empathy, combined with her vast knowledge, inspired me to approach the cure with both skill and compassion, always striving to treat the person, not just the illness.

I would love to be a clinical tutor in the future because I believe teaching is an integral part of medical practice. As a clinical tutor, I would have the opportunity to mentor and guide students through the complexities of patient care, sharing both knowledge and experience. The nursing world is ever-evolving, and teaching allows for continuous learning and growth, which is something I value deeply. By being a tutor, I could help shape the next generation of nurses, fostering not just technical expertise, but also empathy, critical thinking, and professionalism. I find this level of impact highly motivating and fulfilling.
