Response to "My Explanation by Jacob Merrick"

I read the open letter written my Jacob and I connected with it a lot. For me, my life experience and situation is both similar and different. Unlike Jacob, I was not born in Escondido. I was actually born in the South and because of this I arrived in California with some ideas and biases I didn't even realized I held. However, like Jacob, I my eyes became opened. I think that it is very hard to address the issue of systemic racism that people have in the US, especially because the country is so big. It is easy to assume that people think the same way as you and maybe, MAYBE, across California this is true. But when you consider how huge the nation is it is very difficult. For me, until I moved here I never realized how many lies I grew up with and without even realizing. Like Jacob, I am thankful and proud to live in Escondido! -SPCH 100 Student
