Do you believe in fate? My brother says there’s no such thing. But I think everything happens for a reason, and there are no coincidences. When you look back on your life, you can see the path that has led to your life today. For example, I was studying finance and wanted to go into banking. Then my brother accidentally slammed the car door on my finger — ouch! The doctor sent me for an X-ray, which was SO COOL! I could see my own bones on the screen, and the X-ray tech explained everything and answered all my questions. Totally fascinating! If I could find her, I’d thank her because that was a life-changing experience. I dropped finance and enrolled in a radiology course. Now, I say that was fate. I mean, if my brother hadn’t broken my finger, I wouldn’t be an X-ray technician today. But he says it was just a lucky break! (Ha! That’s a good one.)

I agree with your brother. People make deliberate decisions based on current circumstances, even if that’s just a chance encounter. If you hadn’t met that X-ray tech, you might have learned about radiology some other way. But you weren’t unhappy in finance, so even if you were a banker now, you’d still be happy.

I think life is a combination of luck and determination. Sometimes, like Lara, you’re in the right place at the right time, but it takes hard work and skill to turn luck into a real opportunity.
