You may feel a little nervous and disorientated, have to ask  where the bathroom is, and you have your best manners in practice. However on  professional experience, you have the added responsibility to complete your set  tasks for assessments, learn as much as you can about all aspects of teaching,  develop your skills, put your knowledge into practice and represent yourself,  the University and students as whole as professionals. Undoubtedly you will  feel somewhat exhausted at the end of the day so it's important to have a clear  list of what you want to achieve each day. This will help to ensure you leave  some time to continue studying and debriefing on the discussion board as well  as taking some time out for yourself.

There are several different  discussion threads set up in the practicum lounge with the weekly fo. I encourage you to dip in  and out of these threads over the next four weeks, to share your experiences about prac.

  • General discussion. This thread is for you  to share your successes and challenges, strategies, goals and so on. 
  • Finding a treasure. This is a space for you to share resources you have found, along with photos.
  • Relationships. This is an area for you to  discuss the relationships that you are building or struggling with, with  children, parents and other carers. This is an area for sharing strategies,  experiences, or trouble-shooting issues.
  • Learning plans and assessing experiences. This  is a space to workshop learning plans in advance of your submission date for  assessment.

Your Mentor teacher/s will be very busy in their everyday roles and responsibilities  so it is helpful to take a proactive approach to all aspects your professional  experience. This includes:

  • being aware of your start-finish time each day 
  • introducing yourself to all professionals, families  and children 
  • making a time to discuss your expectations and  tasks with your mentor/ supervisor 
  • ensuring your supervisor has all the necessary  paperwork and contact details for Swinburne Online 
  • asking questions before you begin to plan and  implement your tasks 
  • engaging in professional conversations with your  Mentor about the philosophy, curriculum, families and children and specific  teaching practices
