Offred is the main protagonist and narrator of the story. She is a young woman who is trapped in Gilead as a Handmaiden, a surrogate mother or ‘two-legged womb’. In the time before Gilead, she was married to her husband Luke, and they had a daughter. Her name is derived from Of-Fred, Fred being the name of her current Commander and her real name is never revealed. She is forbidden to use her own name but keeps it like a buried treasure as a guarantee of her other identity. Her individual rights have been taken away and she is virtually imprisoned in the domestic spaces of the home she is assigned to and where she is only allowed to go out with a shopping partner. Most of the time she is isolated and afraid. Through all of this she retains her psychological freedom and has a vivacious awareness of the world around her. She is also prudently subversive but never fully rebellious and refuses to be taken in by the propaganda and rhetoric of Gilead when she finds ways to challenge and evade the absolute authority of the state. This helps her to maintain her integrity, dignity and self-respect.

Luke is Offred’s husband from the time before Gilead. He was captured whilst trying to help his family escape across the border to Canada. He has been missing ever since his capture and is presumed to be dead even before the narrative begins. Offred is haunted by his memory and his story is told through flashbacks and her ongoing anxiety about his fate. He features constantly in her nightmare of their failed escape attempt where her final image of him was lying face down in the snow after being shot. She is left wondering is he dead, in prison or did he escape. She hopes he will send her a message and help her escape back into their old family life when she says, “It’s this message, which may never arrive, that keeps me alive. I believe in this message.” Through Offred’s memories of him he is portrayed as a liberated man from the time before Gilead who was courageous, funny and is remembered for their intimate personal relationship. He was older than her and had been married before. He was Offred’s lover, husband and the father of her daughter. As her affair with Nick the chauffeur develops her memories of Luke begin to fade.

Quotations from The Handmaid’s Tale

Nick Bowden

‘I wait. I compose myself. My self is a thing I must now compose, as one composes a speech. What I must present is a made up thing, not something born.’ (p 76)

‘We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the black and white spaces at the edges of print.’ (p.66)

‘We are for breeding purposes: we aren’t concubines, geisha girls, courtesans... no room is to be permitted for the flowering of secret lusts; no special favours are to be wheeled, by them or us, there are to be no toeholds for love. We are two legged wombs, that’s all: sacred vessels, ambulatory chalices.’ (p.146)

‘Fake it, I scream at myself inside my head. You must remember how. Let's get this over with or you’ll be here all night. Bestir yourself. Move your flesh around, breath audibly. It’s the least you can do.’ (p.267)

‘I made that up. It didn’t happen that way. Here is what happened.’ (p.273)

‘And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light.’ (p.307)

‘Are there any questions?’ 9P.324)
