My two lessons take place at the Mildura English Language Center, in Victoria Australia. The 50 acre citrus farm is located just over the Victorian boarder (5 minutes from Mildura) and provides opportunities for the public to learn about citrus farming in the Sunraysia fruit growing region. At the farm students take a tractor tour around the farm and have the opportunity to see how the fruit is grown and harvested. Ramin and his twin sister Stela are both seven years old. Prior to immigrating to Australia their father, Asif, worked as an electrician and was involved in establishing one of the first electric radio towers in Panjshir. Stela and Ramin have been attending the Mildura English Language School for the past three months. Stela and Ramin are currently at BL 0.2 and attend the local primary school each Friday. Fathima and her parents belong to the Tamil ethnic group. Fathima's parents decided to leave Sri Lanka in 2015 due to the ongoing tensions between the Sinhalese and Tamil ethnic groups. Fathima and her parents qualified for a humanitarian visa due to the ongoing conflict in their home country. Fathima has been attending the Mildura English Language Center for the past five months and is currently at a BL 0.2. When Fathima was three years old she was exposed to a large explosion outside of their home in Colombo. Fathima's parents suspect that she sustained significant damage to her hearing during this event. Joseph is five and his sister Nella is seven. Joseph and Nella were born in Mildura, Australia however their parents had limited English language skills at the time of their birth, so Kirundi is the primary language spoken at home. While Nella is slightly older than Joseph, as she was not exposed to English until she stated school, so her English proficiency is not far from Joseph. Nella started at the Mildura Language Center 8 months ago and her brother Joseph started two months ago. Joseph is currently at a BL 0.2 and Nella is at a BL0.3. The city sits on the Victorian and New South Whales border. According to the Mildura Rural City Council, the city was declared a 'Refugee Welcome Zone' in 2002 (2019). The focus of the declaration is to ensure that newly immigrated families feel welcomed and valued.
