Thrillers are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety.

The main aspect of thriller films is that it gives you anxiety and makes you nervous through suspense. They're shown reacting to the situations they're in and display their mistakes for the audience to see. Usually, the main character is a glorified hero that feels nothing, has no depth and has made no mistakes.

For example, in Don't Breathe, the plot twist is that the seemingly helpless blind man is actually a ruthless killer. This twist changes the entire atmosphere of the situation the protagonists are in and transforms the film whilst giving a boost of anxiety to the audience.

This genre also works on the psychological aspect of the situation the character's are in, and deal with the consequences of reaching a mind's limit.

A good example for this would be Split, a film that shows an extremely negative situation involving the kidnapping of three girls by a man who suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder). You'd think that the film's main focus would be the man, but the protagonist has a dark backstory that saves her in the end.
