Having diverse literature in the classroom allows for students see and read about the different cultures and get a better understanding as to what makes each culture and ethnicity unique. This is seen in early childhood education classrooms the best due to picture books being used. However, teachers in older grades can have different magazines and pieces of literature that explain the workings of other cultures.

By assigning multicultural assignments this allows students to learn and do deeper research into the different diverse cultures that interest them. Most of the time this is done in the form of a multicultural fair where students create presentations that are shown to the school and everyone gets to learn about the diverse cultures.

Teachers may choose to celebrate different cultural holidays and events in the classroom. This can be done during the month of December since many cultures have holidays during this time. Another thing could be to simply teach the students about the holiday on the day that it is happening. Something as basic and just a 5 minute explanation can open the students eyes and minds to the diversity in the world around them.

This can be a great opportunity for students to share with the class the cool things about their culture, such as cultural dress, food, and activities.

This not only creates a trust between the groups but allows for the teacher to have a better connection in the community and with the students they are teaching. By doing this the teacher can create a welcoming and safe environment for anyone of any culture which is the key for a successful teacher and classroom.

Teachers must be flexible in their teaching when accepting a multicultural classroom. They are going to have to make adjustments for students who have cultural religions where they can not create their homework or allow a student to sleep if they are fasting for their religion. We have to remember that as educators we are supposed to be kind and welcoming to our students and treat them with the same respect that we expect out of them.

This has already been mentioned several times but there must be a welcoming and caring learning environment where the students feel safe. Everyone who is becoming an educator remembers that one teacher who influenced them to choose this career path, their classroom felt like a second home. It is our jobs to be that same influence and have that same classroom environment to spark the next generation of educators.

For most students they are going to feel lost in the sea of other students at some point or another in their school career. All it takes is one teacher to acknowledge that student, take note in their clothing or something that can help them feel like they belong to that school. A teacher can take note that a student is of a different religion and understand that they are going to miss days for religious events. By accepting the students and their diversity this creates the respect that all teachers want from their students.

Have a Google Doc or some other forum so every student can add different cultures to the list to learn about. Allow yourself to dive into these cultures and learn about them in a way that gets you excited to teach it to the students. Today we see a lot more diversity in the world and need to show students how to respect and understand these other cultures.

Teachers can use inclusive language to not offend any culture but also learn basic words of other languages so they can communicate with students and families. This does not have to only be foreign languages like Spanish or German, but understanding and knowing basic sign language as well so they can communicate with a wide range of people inside and outside of the classroom.

This can be done by the teachers or be a student led even. The students can help by making presentations or other items that are displayed in their teacher's classroom or any other location. This not only gets the whole community involved but allows the students to help spread multiculturalism around and show respect to other cultures.
