Can We Talk Without Words?

Yes! We communicate a lot without speaking—through tone of voice, body language, and touch.

1. Voice Clues

- Tone (happy, angry, sarcastic)

- Speed (fast = excited, slow = bored)

- Volume (loud = confident, quiet = shy)

Why it matters:

The way you say something can change its meaning. A friendly "Nice job!" feels good, but a sarcastic "Nice job..." sounds mean.

2. Body Language

- Face (smiling = happy, frowning = upset)

- Eyes (looking at someone = interested, looking away = nervous)

- Posture (standing with chest up = confident, hunching = tired)

- Gestures (nodding = "yes," shaking head = "no")

Why it matters:

Even if you say "I’m fine," crossed arms and a frown tell people you’re not.

3. Touch

- Handshakes (at work), hugs (with friends/family), high-fives (when celebrating).

Verbal vs. Nonverbal: Which is Better?

Both matter!

- Words are best for facts ("The meeting is at 3 PM sharp").

- Nonverbal is best for feelings (eye roll = "I'm annoyed").

Most important: If your words and body language don’t match, people believe your body.

Conclusion:

Both are equally important but if I were to choose, it's non verbal because action speaks louder than words.

1. Yes, we can communicate without words by using non-verbal communication like gesture, eye contact facial expression and many more.

2. Voice attributes is about tone. For example, stutter or shacky voice may seem nervousness.

3. Physical attributes is about body languange, posture, appearance & many more. For example nodding while saying "yes"

4. Touch is more like hugging and handshake. It is okay and also depends on context. For example, in formal meeting a handshake is accepted

5. In my opinion, l think non-verbal communication is way better. This is because our body and face always express the emotions naturally, eventhough we did'nt say anything. For example, when someone is smiling, it show happiness.

Last semester 1, I had a group presentation with classmates I didn’t know very well. We planned everything through WhatsApp, but when we met in person to practice, I noticed one of my group members looked nervous. She didn’t really talk much and kept avoiding eye contact. Her body language, like crossing her arms and fidgeting, made it obvious she was not confident.

I decided to check on her and asked if everything was okay. She told me she was really nervous about presenting because she wasn’t good at speaking in front of people. I gave her some encouragement and told her she didn’t have to worry because we were all in this together. I also supported her during our practice by giving her a thumbs up and smiling when she presenting

At the end, she did well in the presentation. I learned that sometimes people don’t say how they feel, but their actions show it. So, it’s important to pay attention to nonverbal cues and be kind with our words.

One day, I was talking with my friends about someone. I didn’t even say anything meanwhile I just raised my eyebrows and gave them a certain look. Instantly, they understood what I meant. It’s crazy how sometimes, you don’t need words at all to communicate.

We’ve known each other for so long that even a small facial expression or hand gesture says a lot. Sometimes I just make a weird face, and they already know I’m about to say something funny or spill some tea. It’s even more useful in class or quiet places where we can’t talk. Just one look, and everyone gets the message.

Honestly, I think non-verbal communication is cool. Not everything needs to be said out loud. A simple look or expression can say more than words, especially when you’ve got that kind of connection with your friends.

Last week, I had a small misunderstanding with my friend because of the way I said something. We were planning a group outing, and I told her, “You always change the plan last minute,” in a joking way. I smiled and laughed when I said it, but she looked upset and stayed quiet. Later, I found out that she thought I was actually annoyed with her. Even though my words were not that serious, my tone must’ve sounded too harsh, and maybe my joke didn’t come across clearly. I realized that sometimes, even when we’re joking, people can take it the wrong way if our tone or facial expression doesn’t match the message. That moment taught me how important it is to be careful not only with what I say, but also how I say it . because nonverbal cues can easily change the meaning of a message.

My mother has a unique way of guiding me through her eyes. Without saying a single thing, she can tell me to behave, correct my actions, or remind me of my manners. A single glance from her speaks louder than any scolding ever could.

Whenever I’m tempted to misbehave in public or act impulsively, I feel her gaze on me. Her eyes narrow slightly, her expression firm but calm. In that moment, I understand exactly what she means: "Think before you act." It’s as if we share a secret language, one that keeps me in line without embarrassing me in front of others.

Some might think strict rules or raised voices are the only ways to discipline a child, but my mother’s silent communication is far more powerful. Her eyes don’t just warn me. They teach me self-control. Over time, I’ve learned to pause and consider my actions before doing something I might regret.

For me, non-verbal communication taught me how to read someone expressions and predict their expectations before they act.

As soon as he arrived to pick me up, I felt he gave me a serious look and didn't say anything during the ride back. However, upon reflection, I realized that he was angry and worried about me for not informing him before going to the laundry place. even though he didn't use words, I could interpret his actions as a silent way of saying, "I'm angry with you and worried about your safety". The message was very clear to me because of his noticeable reaction. I feel guilty and apologized to him.

The message was quite clear to me because of how strange his behavior was from normal.

When I was in highschool I went to my friends class to hangout and while we were chit chatting I realized one of my friend went out of class suddenly and zoned out looking through the view of the balcony. I didn't really suspected anything and instead I invited her to join us but she just stood there and rejected me with a blank face. As I gaze and stare into her eyes it kinda hit me that I felt like she needed a hug and I just went in to hug her and pat her back trying to comfort her with my touch. She never said anything but I just felt like she's not okay and said that "it's okay if u wanna cry, I'm here" right after that she burst out crying and all of my other friends came out to check on us and when they saw us they also went into a group hug.

At the end of the day no one really knows what had happened to her that made her sad but we just know that at that moment she needed that in order to get back up stronger again.

We can see that nonverbal communication, facial expressions, body language and even vibes really is a powerful way of conveying the feeling and emotion of the message without having to use any words.

When I was there, I was so shocked to see her condition. Her face was pale, her lips started turning bluish-white and she was groaning in pain while called out my name, my mother’s name and my sister’s name, saying “it’s hurts so much”.

After that, I held her head in my lap, trying to comfort her. She was too weak too speak at that time but she gripped my hand tightly as a sign or message that she was in intense pain. And she also clutched her stomach tightly as she groaned in pain. I was totally understanding the message she wanted to tell me and the other that time. I can see based on her facial expression and her gesture that she was in pain and cannot bear the pain anymore. What did I do at that time? I still shocked watching her struggling with the pain while trying to comfort her even though it doesn’t help or took the pain away.

I didn't understood his request at first, but my dad did understand those gesture as he is very used to interact with mute when his was young . My dad gave permission for it, as we usually just threw them away or left them behind, I gave him the boxes. He then began breaking them down. His message wasn't that clear as i wasnt that fluent in hand gesture language. And To this day, he still comes at the end of the market to collect boxes from us and other sellers to sell it after. Once everyone done talking there it was my turn to talk to my dad. But I kept on resisting and shaking my head while everyone were forcing me to talk because this might be the last time and chance to talk to him. Then my dad looked me in the eye lovingly with assurance like he was gonna say “its alright”. Rather than urging me to talk to him, he opened up his arms for me, offering me a hug instead. Its like he understand that I dont have the urge to talk anymore and not brave enough to let him go.

I was severely depressed throughout my high school years and I had a best friend who was there for me through my best and worst days. Every morning I would walk to her house and we’d walk to school together. I still remember this vividly, every time my mental state got so bad, I would be silent the whole walk to school and just right when we get to our class, I went up to her and bawled my eyes out. She hugged me tightly without saying or asking anything. She would pat my head waiting patiently for me to let go first, even if the hug lasts for an hour.

The hug really said everything because it comforted me so much. She knows all I needed is a big warm hug and to be told that I’m loved. To me, the hug sounded like “It’s not your fault” “Everything is going to be okay” and “I love you even if you think everyone else doesn’t”.

The message was clear to me because I know she loves and cares for me even without having to say it to each other.

Not sure if this answers the question but I think love is not always has to be verbally expressed. I looked at my housemate, who was sitting on the couch. He didn’t say anything, but He gave me a quick raised eyebrow and a slight smirk.

His expression clearly meant, “I did the chores this time, but don’t let it happen again.” It was a silent reminder to take responsibility.

I immediately understood that He wasn’t angry, but He wanted me to notice and appreciate his effort—and remember to do my part next time.

It was very clear. His body language—relaxed posture but raised eyebrow—was enough to express both his patience and his silent warning in a humorous way.

This situation happened a month ago at TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) when I was about to return to my hometown. Two Pakistani men had just arrived at TBS and handed me their bus tickets without saying a word. I looked at them strangely, wondering why they suddenly gave me their tickets. I took the tickets and read them. It said “TBS–Melaka Sentral, 5PM, Gate 4.” I asked them, “Is this your ticket?” and they nodded. I then explained to them how to get to Gate 4 to board their bus. After I explained everything, they simply shook their heads with confused expressions. I asked them “Do you speak English?” and they shook their heads again. That’s when I realized they didn’t understand a word I had said. So, I decided to take them directly to Gate 4 and asked a security officer to assist them. In conclusion, I believe that non-verbal communication is very difficult, especially when there are barriers such as language differences.

*ps - sorry for the late submission madam

:(
