The history of the Island of Ireland is divided into several phases and is characterized by numerous military invasions by outside people.
The division between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland is quite recent: in fact created with the signing of the Treaty Government of Ireland Act of 1920.

From 1 January 1801 until 6 December 1922, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Ireland). During the great famine, from 1845 to 1849, the island's population fell by 30%, from over 8 million less than 6 million. One million Irish died of starvation or disease and 1.5 million others emigrated, mainly to the United States.

After the division of Ireland began the Irish Civil War that was a conflict that followed the Irish War of Independence.
The civil war was waged between two opposing groups, Irish republicans and Irish nationalists, over the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Many of those who fought in the conflict had been members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during the War of Independence.
