Sarah Grimke was born into a wealthy, pro slavery family in the south. Her father, John Faucheraud Grimke, was a South Carolina judge and plantation owner. She watched slaves be whipped, beat, and hurt. She hated it so much that she begged a ship's captain to take her away. Sarah and her sister understood the horrors of slavery from a young age. Sarah even began to teach slaves how to read, despite the possibility of being punished.

Sarah Grimke fought her battles with words. She wrote many anti-slavery books with her sister. Some of these books and articles include: Epistle to the Clergy of the Southern States, Letters on the Equality of the Sexes and the Condition of Women, and Slavery As It Is: Testimony of a Thousand Witnesses. Her books gained a lot of attention and are still well known today.
She also gave a handful of speeches to some of the largest crowds.

Freedom is the right to have a choice. It is choosing where you live, where you work, what you eat, what you wear, and everything else. When freedom is withheld, in order to obtain it one must first battle peacefully. This is usually in the form of a speech, protest, or document. If that does not work, freedom should be taken back using force. Sometimes violence is the only way to make people listen.

The Abolitionist Movement was a time period where Americans began to denounce slavery and push for equal rights. Different abolitionists had different ways of doing so, but most were in the form of writing and giving speeches. Some extremists believed in using violence to end slavery. All of this led to the civil war, which abolished slavery.

A real world example of someone exercising their freedom would be someone attending a community college rather than a university, even though they had the option to go to the university. They had the right to decide where they wanted to get an education. Being free means deciding what you do and when. An example of someone's freedom being taken away could be a parent grounding their child. Because the child is not an adult and isn't responsible enough to make decisions, the parent is in charge of them. A parent can punish a child by taking some of their freedoms away, like going out or watching TV.
