In the book, betrayal is shown in a more direct way, in which the author indicates this action through objective sentences, such as:

The Oracle's prophecy to Percy warns, "You shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend". At the time, Percy suspects many people, but Luke is the only character who fits perfectly with this prophecy;

"I used you, Percy. You were the perfect bait," he confesses. Luke explains that he gave Percy the flying shoes as a rigged gift, knowing Grover would end up wearing them. The shoes were meant to drag the master bolt and whoever was carrying it into Tartarus.

"I'm the lightning thief," Luke admits to Percy after revealing his involvement in the plan to start a war among the gods.

He also notices many similarities between his son, Ezequiel, and Escobar, thus beginning to strongly suspect that Capitu and his friend, Escobar, had an affair.

However, no one knows if Capitu actually cheated on Bentinho. The story is told by Bentinho himself, who is unreliable and provides no concrete evidence of the betrayal, leaving the reader with doubts: did Capitu cheat on Bentinho, or was it simply a product of his jealousy and obsession?

In the book, since the story is told from Bentinho's perspective, the betrayal is shown indirectly, as it is not possible to know if it is the result of his paranoia or if it really happened.

This can be analyzed in the sentences:

-"Ezequiel was now living more out of my sight, but his return, at the end of the weeks, either because I was out of habit, or because time passed and completed the resemblance, was the return of Escobar, more alive and noisy."--(It shows how Ezequiel's resemblance to Escobar is an interpretation by Bentinho, which may be the result of his obsession.);

In Escobar's death scene in Dom Casmurro, Bentinho describes Capitu's gaze as "wide and open, like the waves of the sea outside, as if they wanted to swallow the morning swimmer too." This phrase suggests that her gaze was not merely one of pain, but of a deep and overwhelming attraction, intensifying the narrator's doubts and suspicions about her relationship with the deceased.
