Working with at least one partner on a shared Google Doc, discuss two patterns you see emerging in the selection of The Odyssey that you read. Then, identify two symbols that appear in the selection, and explain their significance. Include a level-2 claim.

Be sure to add the names of all group members.

The main parts of the two books we read were when Odysseus proved himself to penelope by telling the bed story. The bed was made of an olive tree which symbolizes peace and hope. The bed was also in the center of the palace which was in the center of his city. Another big symbol in these books was the baths. People would take baths before they came home as a way to restart. A pattern in these books was that every time he went somewhere, he encountered someone important. Another pattern is that his higher power helps him through all his hard times because people found him honorable.

-Anna and Sophia

One symbol from The Odyssey Books 11 and 12 was Tiresias’s blindness, this is a symbol of insight because it shows how tiresias can still have a good understanding of the atmosphere around him even when he cannot see outside of himself, but only on the inside. This is significant to the story because it shows how Odysseus and Tiresias could still understand each other.

One pattern is that Odysseus keeps on using the boat when he goes from one place to another, this represents how Odysseus is not willing to give up his journey back to his homeland.

Another symbol is the blood when Odysseus and his crew were in the underworld, everyone that he wanted to talk to; Trojan warriors, his mother had to drink the blood in order to talk to him because blood is required in order to live. They sacrificed the animals and poured the blood in the cups. This is significant because without blood, you cannot talk so the souls represent how they need to be living to talk.

Another pattern in these two books was Odysseus losing part of his crew and how he kept voyaging on and he himself never died. He survived it all and lost a lot of his men not giving up, continuing to journey on to reach his goals.

Overall, between these symbols and patterns, they all are related to the concept of sacrificing something for the good of something. So, our claim is that we have made that long-term sacrifice can grant success.

-Luke O'Mara and Luke Pesce

Odysseus and his men are selfish. The crew did not follow the orders Odysseus gave them. The pattern is the men are being disobedient. The pattern breaks when they listen to Circes instead of Odysseus. He starts to respect the gods by sacrificing his best cow. Ultimately by breaking the pattern of disrespect Odysseus learns that accepting powers greater than the self eases mindset to clarify purpose.

- Ava, Sierra, and Amanda
