It was made as an offering to the gods for a sanctuary on the Greek island of Samothrace. The sculpture was made out of parian marble. It was believed to have been sculpted to commemorate a naval victory, neither the battle nor the sculptor has been determined. The Winged Victory of Samopthrace graces the Louvre in Paris.</p>]]></description>

This sarcophagus is a late sixth-century BCE Etruscan anthropoid sarcophagus found at the Banditaccia necropolis in Caere and is now located in the National Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia, Rome. The sarcophagus of the spouse is an urn intended to hold the material remains of the deceased.</p>]]></description>

The Augustus of Prima Porta was made out of marble. The Augustus of Primaporta's function was to transmit an important imperial message to the viewer, and the message of this statue is that the Emperor Augustus is a strong and victorious warrior and a god.</p>]]></description>

         <title>The Colosseum 70–72 AD</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Colosseum was started under Emperor Vespasian, but he died before it was completed. Construction was finished under his two sons, Emperors Titus and Domitian. The building was built largely by Jewish slaves and overseen by Roman engineers and craftsmen. It is located just east of Palatine Hill, on the grounds of Nero's Golden House. The Colosseum was built from an estimated 100,000 cubic meters of travertine stone, plus a similar measure of Roman cement, bricks, and tuff blocks. The Colosseum was built as part of an imperial effort to revitalize Rome after the tumultuous year of the four emperors, 69 CE.</p>]]></description>
