This name is ironic for her character because in her father's house and forest she is constantly outspoken in fighting for herself and her ideologies. These characteristics are the opposite of a messenger, who is supposed to only do as told. As for the meaning "trade," Hermia doesn't marry Demetrius for family benefits like a piece of a trade. Shakespear most likely gave Hermina her name because of her difficulty in love as a woman who is supposed to act like a messenger, but when he fought for it, she was awarded a wedding full of love.

This name is ironic in the forest scenes of the play. Lysander is supposed to save Hermia from her father's will so they can be in love, but he is magically turned to Helena for love. Lysander's change in heart creates more troubles for Hermia than being her savior, even leaving her to wander the forest alone unprotected. Shakespeare most likely gave Lysander his name because of his original intentions which he does complete by marrying Hermia, but it took ironic hardship to get there.

In the case of the characters, especially the four lovers, ironically the forest brought order to their lives thanks to the flower juice. In Athens, everyone was arguing, stressed, or unhappy in their lives. In the forest, many of the characters learn life lessons on love and life values that lead to their happiness when they return to Athens or their fairy kingdom. In this play, it took hardship and chaos to become happy in order.
