The article goes more in depth about the modern use in media, public and private groups, when the poem was explaining more of a time of extreme discrimination and segregation

My first reaction to the article was that I was a little confused. I had never really heard someone say ever that the n-word is used as a term of endearment. I have always heard it as an insult or just another word in a rap song. The poem was more impactful for me because the article talked more about the history of the word until the last paragraph. In the poem you weren't expecting it so it had more of an impact as for the article you knew it was talking about it so there wasn't the same initial reaction.

At first, I was confused on how someone could create a college level course on a single word, but as the article progressed I understood what Neal Lester was trying to do; create a conversation about the word, and hear the reactions and confessions of college-aged kids. For me, the poem was more impactful because of the way it was written (the tone and rhythm) and because it was a real life situation from the point of view of an 8-year-old. The article was interesting, but didn't have much of an impact on me.

The poem was more impactful on me because there was just an eight year old black boy (I am not being racist!) who smiled kindly at a Baltimorean man, only to be called the n word by him. How rude!

Before we read the article, I was a bit confused about why and how an entire college course was centered around one word. Now I can kind of see how it would work, but I still don't think it could take up even just one semester of time. I personally think the poem was more impactful because of the shock value as well as the age that the narrator was at the time and how it showed the impact that the word had on that child. The article wasn't nearly as impactful as the poem.

I still kind of think that it isn't worth it though. I don't understand what degree the n-word course could possibly work towards. I liked the poem more because it had the shock factor. The poem had more feeling than the article.

My reaction to the article was that the n word has much more of a meaning than many people think it does. It has history of how it has evolved in the real world, and I feel that it should not be used. I felt that the professor had a good idea of creating a course that kids can take, because it may have an impact later in life for them and they can use that information to teach others. The article had more of an impact because it really gave meaning of the n word and information on why it is used as well as the culture of it. Versus, the poem which just mentioned the word and reaction but did not really dig as deep as the article.

In my reaction to the article, I agree with Neal A. Lester. His main goal was to try and teach students some nuances of the word, and explain the history behind it. I don't like the fact that because white youths hear the song, they think it is okay to say the word. Of course that would instigate violence by others, because of all the racial indignation from the pain caused from hearing that word. In a perfect world, nobody would use such derogatory terms, and it offends me to hear anybody in any capacity use the word. The poem was more impactful, because I felt uncomfortable when the n-word came up, and it made me more attentive to what was going on in the poem.

The n word is just not a regular word that should be used in normal conversation because of the history of the word should be more well known as it was only less than 100 years ago and in history terms that is extremely recent to us and we need to know more about the past so we don't make the same mistakes in the future. The article left a bigger impact on me because it went more in depth into one word otherwise in the poem it shows what the impact left on the person.
