Highlight of the week

This week, I began my Final Major project. The week was quite slow as I was tasked to do various things such as:

produce a website for my FMP where I would be uploading photos of my process of making my project,
a YouTube channel to upload my videos
begin my first draft for my Project Proposal
and also consider attending an exhibition or two and make some primary research for my project.

This week was the half term which I used to take some time to rest but also during this time, my time was consumed by me producing my portfolio for the universities i had applied for as their portfolio deadline were all within the half term. Although my goal for the half term was to attend an exhibition or visit a museum, I had one major obstacle which hindered my ability which was that my device broken down, making it near impossible to document of journeys or make some primary research.

In Spite of this, later in the week, I managed to upload all of my portfolio requests and at the last minute, was able to produced some clay forms and briefly go to the National Gallery.

In this week, I actively engaged with various practices and primary research for My FMP.

I was introduced to Shibori, however, I felt that my work would highly benefit from using non-dyed shibori which unlike dyed shibori whereby a coloured dye is introduced, I primarily used non-dyed shibori to achieve a textured effect. For my first initial samples, I used a knitted sample and a sheer fabric - in order to achieve my desired effect, I made use of some buttons, marbles, beads to tightly wrap them in the fabrics that I used.

Later that week, I visited the Barbican Art Gallery to see their latest exhibition Unravel.

Continuing from last week's work, once my shibori work dried, I explored different compositions of the sample on a half scale stand.

Highlight of the week

This week, my main focus was mostly catching up to any work that weren't completed during the half term. Most of what I did this week as making a few samples that contributed towards my primary research as well as adding any written analysis for the primary and secondary research I selected to my FMP.

Some of the highlights of the week were mainly producing a colour palette inspired by a picture of a location within the National Gallery which I visited the week before as well as producing some samples, looking at fabric manipulation techniques such as tucks and pleats.

In preparation for the interim assessment and the beginning of the Production part of my FMP, I decided to expand on the works I previously work on, selecting certain areas and elements from my previous work and experiments to develop my ideas and gain a better grasp of what my outcomes could potentially entail. Here, I produced two drapes work, one looks at turning a draped garment from a half scale stand into a somewhat functional garment 9 the garment with made using some sheer synthetic materials). The second item I produced on the half scale stand, aimed to amplify the circular shape that I explored using the Shibori sample. The sample in the pink explores how the shapes would look if they were larger. To make the fabric for this sample, I wrapped some cardboard cut-outs of circles inside some pink fabric.

Hopefully, I could use these work to develop my work further and help for my outcomes designs.

Unravel Exhibition at the Barbican

On Wednesday, our class decided to go on a group trip to the Barbican exhibition and I joined them as this was my second time going to the exhibition. This time, I was given the opportunity to draw some of the work I came across. I made some quick drawings/ sketches in my second journal.

Small evaluation/reflection

Although I produced other composition/drapes with the pink fabric, this draped work was my favourite as it perfectly displayed the forms and folds I envisioned my work to be. The texture of the folds and pleats from this particular draped work was quite visually appealing.

This week was quite slow as there was the Interim Assessment/ Formative to prepare for, which was to an extend the major focus of the week. I spent some time taking photos of my sketchbook, updating my bibliography and updating my website to reflect my current work in preparation of the interim Assessment.

For this, I first draped some grey sheer fabrics on a half scale stand. Then, I, using some basting stitches, stitched around the draped work, ensuring the fabric were stitched together and not to the stand. Once I done this, I remove the garment from the stand and sewn each part of the garment together. i later added a small shibori work I made at home.

Although i was satisfied with the outcome and how effective and successful it came out, I decided it was best to not continue referencing the original work I made.

Process of the draping

I took inspiration from a couture line by ... Referencing the designer's work, I produced this draped garment to have a starting point for my draped work. I imagined my work to be more fitted and draping served as a great starting point for it.

This week, I spent some time completing my sketchbook pages in preparation for the Easter Holiday. I was informed that school/college was finishing on Wednesday which made it quite difficult to keep up with the workload. I originally intend for this time/ week to be spend producing mock-ups of my outcome and I felt that the school trip to the Barbican and the college being closed a day before set me back from what I could have done.

Earlier in the week, I produced some lightly larger samples of the knit work I made from later week. I familiarised myself to the technique I was producing on the knitting machine which made it easier to make the samples.

Work done during the Easter Holiday

During the holiday, I spent some time resting as i felt that I was almost overworking myself the past few weeks before the Easter Holiday. Some of the work I spent doing were cutting some of the images I printed out of my work before the holiday to my sketchbook and created these fashion collages which I intent on using to influence/inform some of my designs.

Some of the collages I felt were good but I was not pleased with the outcomes of them.

During this time, I also began cutting out the photos I took of my works before the holiday to be added to my sketchbook. i felt that some of the work I produced before the holiday would inform my design ideas for my outcomes, especially the silhouette of those work

In this week, I spent some times with the rest of my family visiting Windsor Castle and its neighbouring areas in a somewhat family day out. I came around this monument in honour of our late Queen which I felt the structure, composition and arrangement of the main shapes of the monument.

And these were my chosen colours and materials. After having some long and complicated conversation with my tutors on what colours would work together harmoniously, I was finally able to have a colour palette for my collection, which consisted of greys, peach, red/purple-ish red, dark blue and brown and those colours were initially represented in these materials. I later purchased more materials for referencing this colour combination.

I further develop my design's elements by comparing and contrasting different coloured materials and fabrics to clarify and establish what materials would be used for my collection as well as what colours would work together.

On Friday, I spent some time recreating the second knitted party of the second garment (brown dress) the second knitted part is made using some burgundy yarn and instead of including the mohair yarn/fluffy yarn to the knitted part. Unlike the first panel, this piece was quite simple and easy to make, despite how time consuming it was, I was able to successfully make it mostly in one whole day whereas the first part, I spent a few days to make as I frequently changed the setting to achieve the desired texture but in addition to this, I also had the difficulty of constantly changing the yarn I was using to have some part of the knitted piece.

Even after I knitted the part, I realised that the piece was slightly shorter than the first knitted part of the second garment, despite this, I am not too worried about it and I was quite pleased with the outcome

Starting my first outcome

On Tuesday, I began the process of making my outcome; I selected the blue turtleneck dress (which I named as the first garment). For my outcomes, I realised that two of my outcomes would consist of knit as a large component of it, and because of this, I selected the garments that would require that I use the knitting machine.
As I was producing this outcome, I realised that the shape of the turtleneck would be plain; to challenge myself and add more texture to my outcome, I manually applied some ribs to the knit for the turtleneck ( as seen on the image)

This was the turtleneck, with each panels joined together. To make the turtleneck, I knitted four panels, two side panels and one front and back panel. The turtleneck turned out larger that I expected it to be, however for my design, I imagined the outcome to have a large turtleneck which is folded to cover the mouth and nose

Over the weekend

Over the weekend, I spent some time constructing the lining of my third garment - after I drafted my pattern, I place the pattern on top of my fabric to then cutting out and sew together

For my second garment, I sent some times drafting the sleeve pattern and make the exterior part of my sleeve, I wanted the sleeve to be an off-shoulder piece which would only be attached to the garment for underneath (armhole/ armpit area)

For each design, I took into consideration how my previous samples and development could influence the design, whether that be thought the method and practice I use such as shibori, shirring, knitting, pattern cutting or draping. Using the different techniques I previous used, I attempted to translate their forms and shapes through the details of my drawings

After the previous week which I handed in my sketchbook for both Pre-production and production phase, I spent the Half Term doing my photoshoot as part of my post production work. I selected my location/ setting for the photoshoot to be in a local park and made use of the different places and objects throughout the park as background props. I taken my own photographs using my personal camera to ease with transferring and accessing my work during the half term. the outcome of the photoshoot was incredible and I was quite pleasantly surprised by how successful the outcome were as well as the photoshoot.

This week was the final week and later in the week was the exhibition for the post production work. In this week, I spend some time organising and preparing for the exhibition and how i would exhibit my work.

I first selected the images I wanted to use for my exhibition as I had taken a lot of images and wanted to be sure that I was satisfied with their outcome to be displayed in the exhibition.
