Eva's sweetness touches Tom, and she convinces his father to buy it. Tom thus arrives at a house where he is treated with a certain dignity. Meanwhile, the situation of other slaves with different owners is shown. Tom demonstrates his kindness, honesty and faith from the beginning. This section of the novel offers an emotional respite.

In New Orleans, Tom adjusts to his new surroundings. The St. Clare's house is chaotic but less cruel. Ophelia, St. Clare's cousin, arrives from the north and represents the critical reader of the slave system. Although he condemns slavery, he is prejudiced. Eva becomes an increasingly spiritual and generous figure. Tom works mainly as a coachman and assistant. He begins to look with hope at the promise of future freedom. The St. Clare family reflects the contradictions of Southern whites. This section shows the tension between morality and comfort.

                                                                                  Pag. 14

Eliza and George Harris continue their elopement with their son. They receive help from abolitionists and good-hearted people. George is shown to be an intelligent man determined to fight for his freedom. Slave catcher Tom Loker pursues them, but ends up injured and is treated by the fugitives.
