In this chapter we learn about a single note and how it used specifically to stand out in a song and be noticed by the listener. Ratliff uses the example of one song called "Thelonious" by Thelonious Monk to show how using one note acknowledges melody, rhythm, and harmony. He also explains how an artist uses this to have unique part of the song that stands on its own. I agree with Ratliff's argument in regards to a single note in a song. I think a single note is meant to stand out and alone from the rest of the piece and it's for the audience to notice. I talked about one of the songs on Ratliff's playlist,
"Thelonious", and how the single note was used to convey how the artist sees himself in the world, rapid and fast changing but he himself stays the same, hence the note. A song not on his playlist is The Rolling Stones, "Satisfaction", which uses one note on the guitar throughout the song. It stands out and emphasizes what he's trying to say.
