Amy Lowell Quote

“[Poetry] is the height and quintessence of emotion, of every sort of emotion. But it is always someone feeling something at white heat, and it is as vital as the description of a battle would be, told by a soldier who had been in it.”

Amy Lowell is describing such a feeling that she has while writing and reading poetry. She states that it is a height of emotion and excitement. Her comparison to a soldier telling a battle story is effective because the readers picture someone so dedicated and so driven. As a soldier who experienced a battle I picture someone who is so deep and passionate in their thought and explanation.

This poem is about a father and son relationship. The height of emotion in this poem is the young boys feelings, he wants to spend more time with his father. His father is drunk and in the beginning of the poem the author points that out for the readers. The father is not a traditional father who plays catch and video games with his son, he drinks and the son takes advantage of the time he does have with his father. At the end of the poem when the author states "Then waltzed me off to bed
Still clinging to your shirt"
The readers get a sense of sadness because it is obvious the boy does not have the greatest relationship with his father.

Funeral Blues is about a lover who lost their significant other. This poem is definitely very emotional. The person in the poem explains their heartache of losing their loved one. There is a height of emotion in this poem and this quote supports that "The stars are not wanted now; put out every one, Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good"

The Whipping is told from an outside view, however the height in emotion is clear. The readers know the young boy in this poem senses a height in negative emotion because he gets physically punished. "She strikes and strikes the shrilly circling boy till the stick breaks
in her hand. His tears are rainy weather to woundlike memories". This quote shows the boys emotions and obviously him and this woman do not have a good relationship since the poem states that he sobs in his room.

The Silken Tent displays height in emotion between two lovers. The man shows his love for her by speaking of her beauty and dedication. When he says "But strictly held by none, is loosely bound
By countless silken ties of love and thought". He compares her to a silken tent and her love and thought is represented by the silken ties. This poem relates with Amy Lowell's quote because it displays their emotions when speaking of her and comparing her personality and characteristics to a silken tent.

The young girl in this poem feels a height of emotion when she tells her "white lies". Others in her class thinks she is white and she does not deny it, she goes along with it. She obviously had a reason for going along with it. In the poem it says "But I paid for it every time Mama found out" which shows a different emotion the girl in the play experiences. I'm sure she sensed a height of negative emotion when dealing with the consequences of her mother.

Labrina's Blues

Labrina's blues is about a murder so negative emotions are shown. The play begins speaking about what's done is done, using a common saying "don't cry over spilled milk". A really distinct image created for the readers is "for when that milk is mixed with blood and the tragic story's told...". The author of this poem created the image of spilled milk then related back to it many times in the poem. Someone was killed and a young girl will be incarcerated which is the reason for all the emotions in this poem.

I was a cheerleader for many years and the height of emotion is over the top. The adrenaline, thrill and excitement a cheerleader feels while competing is unexplainable. This video shows the height of emotion while the cheerleaders compete and also when they find out the results at the end. This video is an excellent example of Amy Lowell's quote dealing with height of emotions.

This poem speaks of losing things in life. The author states that losing things and people in life does not mean it will be a disaster. This is really reassuring and positive. The height of emotion in this poem is the authors strong message of being able to accept losses throughout life. This quote states "I lost my mother’s watch. And look! my last, or next-to-last, of three loved houses went.

The art of losing isn’t hard to master". The author constantly states that the art of losing isn't hard to master which is true.

They had height of emotion in their relationship by loving and cherishing one another. The next part of the poem he speaks of feeling that he lost her.
