He said we need to validate and affirm our students, which means we need to make their culture legitimate. This matters because we let our students know that they matter and that they do not have to change who they are at their core.

He also spoke about build and bridge. He meant we need to help our students navigate the different settings they are in. This matters because it will help them achieve success in different settings.

Say: I want you to tell me something about their culture that's an asset

Meaning: This mean, what are they bringing into the classroom, be it their beliefs, their celebrations, their traditions, etc, that we can take as a strength and use it as a springboard for that child and the rest of the class?

Matter: This matters because school works best when students can learn from each other, their similarities and differences, and when we draw from their strengths, not harp on their weaknesses.

Quote: "You are not disrespectful you are culturally misunderstood"
Mean: Many times people in general can be misunderstood or misunderstand others because of cultural norms/differences. People may translate/perceive information or conversations in a different way.
Matter: This matters especially for educators who teach students of different backgrounds because content/information can be misinterpreted from the teacher or the student. The teacher or student might even misread a social que such as feelings/display of feelings because of cultural norms and expectations. It is important as an educator to keep this perspective in mind and have the students and teachers discuss and understand each others cultures and themselves as an individual.
